Tsunami Warning!

I'm just curious, but in the event of a tsunami warning, would it be better to either get or stay offshore a few miles until the tsunami passed?

Personally I would say get as far off shore as you can.

Better still, get off the boat and head for high land where the falling buildings or radiation from the nuke plants may get you. Early on there were reports of a vessel (might have been a ferry) with 100 people onboard that just disappeared. Did you happen to see the pictures on TV of the huge whirlpool swallowing quite large boats? The other alternative is to bend over very far an kiss your a-- goodbye. Only luck or the grace of god saves you in something like this. It happens too fast. The only right move is the one that happens to get you though alive, and the rest just don't matter. With a hurricane you can calculate it's path and possibly pick the right way to run. Not with something like this. When you see it you are no longer in control of anything.

That thought had occured to me also

There are fault lines virtually everywhere on earth. There have been earthquakes, admittedly minor ones, in some unexpected places lately. I seem to recall one not far from here recently. Hmmmm.

Tsunami

Boat my daughter works on was in Papeete, when they were told by harbor master to leave marina. Steamed to Moorea, and no issues. Not sure where other boats went.

Agreed. Tidal waves/Tsunamis are all of 6" high as they race across the open ocean at 500-600 mph...it's when they pile up on a continental shelf and the shallows when they take on Freddy Krueger characteristics.

While reading about a new 7.1 Aftershock I came across this link taken from inside a car as it is wiped out by the first tsunami.

There was also an interesting article about the island of junk that is floating slowly eastwards in the Pacific causing some problems for shipping.

This is incredible footage of the tsunami washing away a town. In the last 30 seconds you see some getting rescued from the waters in the nick of time.
