First off: Hey, Outmywindow- you REALLY suck at stone-skimming man!
Secondly- NYCAP123, I can only imagine that a manatee porn show is like watching surgery on the tv: you're almost gagging, but you can't stop watching through your fingers. Am I right, or is it more like watching dwarves wrestling? And I thought I'd seen it all...

Sumo wrestlers would be more like it. Actually, there was beauty to it. They were amazingly gentle and graceful as they rolled across the bar....Not that I'd want to watch on a regular basis mind you (I like thin ladies);) .

We have the problem with gulls in Devon, along with idiot tourists that like to chuck food onto the boats.

So what was a nice clean deck and pilothouse end up completely s**t encrusted.
We have now taken to putting fish guts on the wall where they sit!!
The gulls stay off the boats and the idiots don't sit there because of the fishy smell.:)

    Shame eh!!

there was a piece on TV a couple of days ago about how they're using falcons to scare the birds away at JFK, seems to work pretty well.

I hate those **** sea gulls... they are smart indeed! they're not a problem in florida, but when i flew back up to Nantucket in sept. to pick up the 70 footer i run, I found the boat covered with broken shells and bird crap.

I discovered (dont' laugh, as i said we dont' have that problem in So Fl) that the seagulls dive in water to pick shells, fly over the boats and drop them from 15 or 20' high to crack them. then they land, eat them and crap.

took me a full day to clean the mess, must have a been 10 or 15 buckets full of shell pieces... got a few chips in the non skid on deck too.

I discovered the "flying crab" phenomenon in Newport where I spent the summer a couple of years ago. They would just drop out of the sky! Of course they were summarily followed by a gull or 2 to pick the innards out and leave the carcasses to wither in the sun and stain whatever they got close to. Docks and decks littered with them on a nice sunny day.

BTW; those fake owls deterred them for about 15 minutes, after which time the gulls would be attacking them too!

Oh well, small price to pay for living in paradise, i guess. :)

Seagulls don’t dive in the water for shells, but pick them up at low tide. Many species of birds drop shells from high places to crack them. Crows are also highly skilled at that.

Last summer I went to check on a client's 1 month old 35 Tiara only to find his windshield smashed. After some checking we came to the conclusion that it was either a defect or a seagull lunch delivery. Around my area the seagulls run from the bay to Mt. Trashmore with a stop off at Pathmark. Rats with wings.

Living on the west coast of scotland, I can testify to the fact that gulls just LOVE dropping mussels from great heights, and it's just too bad if someone's standing on their favorite stretch of concrete. Even more interesting on a windy day, when the gulls don't allow for wind direction.
...and the stone-skimming thing: I grew up there, and believe me there's bugger-all else to do on that god-forsaken rock. I think Sky even televised it last year?!?!?! Now that's bizarre!

Off the bird theme for a moment.

A slightly unpopular Captain I worked for was given a big flashy dive watch, TAG I think. First dive back in Antigua he went down all glintting and bling.

Wham, a 'cudda sliced into the shiney bait. 18 stitches later on his arm and wrist, never was the posh watch seen underwater again. Long live the Casio G-Shock in black. $65 at a store near you.

Hmmm, interesting... Would my moron boss get suspicious if I bought him a diamante wetsuit for his next diving holiday in the Carib? :D

No, putting Veet ladies hair remover foam in his wetsuit is always a good laugh though.

Shark feeding in the Coral sea we used to wear shiney stainless chainmale suits. Not sure if the bulk of the suit kept them alert or attracted them but we were very popular, plus a big bag of bonito does help.
