There are few tall ships coming up the river this week.
    Bluenose and Picton Castle.
The Seaway has increased the water flow down the Montral section of seaway to lower Lake Ontario.
They issued a notice last week that any tall ship that can not do eight knots will not be permitted up the seaway. Several tall ships coming up the St lawrence River are only doing five knots.
Will be interesting when they arrive Montreal to see what happens.
The Seaway has a tug at the Iroquois lock to assist commercial ships in to the lock because of the fast current.

The Quebec bridge section is not an easy one for some of those ships as it gets quite narrow...we often see smaller sailboats turn around under the Quebec bridge at falling tide, then trying again when it's rising.

btw Bella Vita (ex Northern Star) was in Quebec this week but now moving toward Clayton. Will she go thru the Welland Canal?

    BAD LUCK IN MONTREAL

In 2018 the USS Little Rock spent the winter in Montreal and last week the new USS Billing came through the Welland Canal on the way to Montreal then to Florida.
Yesterday she had an accident with the freighter Rosaire Desgagnei in Montreal Harbor. Capture.PNG

U.S. combat ship Billings hits freighter in Canada

6/26 - As it got underway, an advanced U.S. Navy combat ship struck a berthed freighter in Montreal, leaving both ships damaged, but their crews uninjured. The Freedom-class littoral combat ship, slated to be commissioned as the U.S.S. Billings, hit the Rosaire A. Desgagnés about 2:00 p.m., said Lt. Cmdr. Courtney Hillson, a Navy spokesperson.

The 378-foot-long Billings sustained damage under the waterline. The damage to the Rosaire, a 452-foot dry bulk vessel owned by Quebec-based Transport Desgagnés, was unknown.

The Billings was getting underway with the assistance of tugs. The Navy is investigating the incident. “The Navy is conducting an investigation to understand what happened and why,” Hillson said. “We will incorporate lessons learned to ensure we conduct safe and effective operations.”

While the Billings was capable of continuing to its Florida homebase, Naval Station Mayport, it remained it Montreal as of June 24 for additional damage assessment.

The Billings, launched in 2017, is among the newest ships in the Navy’s fleet. The ‎$362 million Freedom class combat boats are billed as high-tech, cost-effective surface warfare vessels suited for modern defense needs. The stealthy ships have been plagued by a host of issues, which have kept them from going operational.

The Rosaire, delivered in 2007, was built by Volharding Shipyards in the Netherlands, in collaboration with Jiangzhou Shipyard in China. It can hold 665 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), with a capacity of nearly 16,000 cubic meters.

Desgagnés Group could not be reached for comment. It has 23 vessels in its fleet.

Why does the stern look like it's actually out of the water?

    Well, it is.
    Boat is light and missing;
Provisions for 200 plus men, plus, 200 plus men.
    Lots of fuel.
Choppers & drones, support tools & spares for choppers & drones.
Support tools & spares for the ship.
    Munitions-Armory-Ammo (Oh Yea).

The boats mission is also; Coastal (shallow) operations.
At least that was a political sales point.

If you kids remember the old Corvette (ships) of the 40 & 50s.
Just sea worthy and strong enough not to sink but the worst riding boat on the seas.
I am feared this is a modern day version.
