We keep a box of all kinds of goodies from wrist bands, patches, pills, ginger, etc. for people. Some react differently than others, so there's an assortment. Fresh air, solid feet, and a clear view of the horizon do wonders.
This is the only thing that works for me, looking at the horizon or keeping busy with things that need physical energy, NOT reading maps, fixing "birds nests" in fishing lines, or attaching hooks! I once went on a long & very rough trip on a trawler to an island off Queensland to do some scuba. Of the 10 of us, male and female, most got sick, except for the Dive Master & a few of us, He was macho & laughing at all the sick ones. I filled my mouth with cornflakes & milk, sat across from him as he carried on about the wimps etc. & then I "threw up" my mouthful of cornflakes/milk directly over his chin & chest. He immediately stood up, turned away, bending over HURLING & was sick for the next hours until we came into the coral bay. Revenge is "sweet!"
hehehe No worries, I just like tripping up the macho egos, & there are quite a few on boats. Some guys think not getting sick makes them real tough, well, not true. Most everyone I know who goes in a bit of rough water, may get sick. I have been sick often, then go months with no issues. Many factors cause it I guess. Night before, attitude, sea, alcohol etc. Watched the trawler men on Discovery & see that a cameraman almost DIED from sea sickness! Just another thing about our unpredictable ocean!
After the first five days of hanging over the side, you'll be cured. But seriously, I tried Dramamine, Bonine, the patches and none worked for longer than six hours leaving me with a huge headache, dry mouth and plugged up kidneys. My ENT recommended and prescribed Scopace - 10 mg tab that lasts 8-10 hours without the nasty side-effects. If you take the tab during the night and one during the cruise you should be fine. I chew Ginger candies when flying.
