Salvage of the Nordhavn EYF that sunk in Mexico

    So if the vessel had 2 Rule 3700 gph pumps in the engine room, and 2 Rule 3700 gph pumps in the lazarette all on automatic switches, it should have kept up with the 9200 gph water intrusion or at least contained it until someone noticed without the vessel sinking to the bottom, considering the boat was connected to shorepower.

    The major problem I see with this design, is you only have 1300 gph of automatic pumping capacity in the engine room. A large majority of things to fail that would cause a large amount of water intrusion would/could happen in the engine room.

    You'd have to notice the leak (a large leak) almost instantly to get the watertight engine room door open without flooding the lazarette also. For example even if you were on-board when this leak would have occured at 9200 gph, even with the 1300gph auto pumping going, in 30 minutes one would have 3,950 gallons of water in the engine room, which I would imagine to be several feet of water in the engine room on this size yacht. The issue is In order to activate the manual 10,000 gph pump and the 240vac emergency pump to keep the boat floating you have to get into the engine room, and also before losing the engines and generators due to water intrusion which would render the emergency pump(s) useless and also take out a lot of the DC power if the engine room water level reached the starters on the engines and shorted out a lot of DC items.

    Even if the watertight door kept the boat from sinking with an engine room leak/flood, you'd still be out in the middle of nowhere, dead in the water.

    Why not simply install a couple of 3700gph rule pumps in the engine room on automatic switches, like most other builders do in the industry in this size yacht. Which would possibly contain an engine room flooding until someone has enough time to react.

    Resurrecting this thread with a question… is there any documentation to the extent of refit that this vessel had undergone? I stumbled along something electrical related and began searching without any substantive conclusion. Such a beautiful vessel.
