It is on my own experience that you are absolutely right.
I put a minimum of 3" vent for a small tank.
It is sometime difficult to route through the deck or accommodation, but it is a price to pay for a simple and odor free waste water tank.
On motor yacht I put a turbine vent at the end of the pipe. It is rather old fashion, but works very well.
