What about if that glimpse of land was as he approached it at terminal velocity having tried to escape by jumping out of the helicopter carrying him at 1500ft?

noted. though i tend to disagree with the notion that those that hate us already will hate us more passionately if we dispense justice as indiscrimanetly as they prosecute their acts of terror.

the end game for me is that the fear of reprisal be so pervasive they would rather chew off their own feet before boarding a craft to do anything other than fish.

excellent plan. i though do not beleive we should bear the expense of using Tomahawks. we have plenty of 5" 54 stock, that needs using up, it's cheap, and comes in many flavors. frag, high explosives, and white phosphorus. the sound of these projectiles ripping through the air while you have no idea of where they might land is indeed terrifying. i know (during a gunnery excercise with the Coast Guard, we were towing a sled target, the Coasties inserted the wrong spot, and began placing rounds over amidships. i happened to be standing on the 01 level observing the excercise. it's a sound one does not soon forget).

again 100% agreement. fear is a dagger. thrust liberally, and twist.

should we say thank you Mr Barack Hussein Obama for clarifying our thoughts on "man caused destruction" and terrorist acts?

it''s only because it's B. Hussein Obama that his arrival is even possible! can you imagine the world wide angst, and outrage, if George Walker Bush had captured and hauled in a 16 yr. old "kid"??

That's our president you're talking about. You know, the one who gave the OK to shoot to kill. We have never and hopefully will never condone the killing of prisoners. Hopefully, we've even stopped torturing them. This miscreant that was taken prisoner will get his just rewards. He will be a very popular fellow in federal prison for the next 40 years or so and his letters home will be great PR. I hope that we don't make taking these terrorists prisoner a habit, but this one is a wonderful thing. In fact, although he smiled going into court I understand he cried himself to sleep.

well how about this: Our fabulous country is proposing that we (the USA) patrol the million miles or so off the somali coast in navy ships. in fact I just saw a couple dispached out of norfolk the other day. what a fantastic waste of resources as usual. is there any reason on earth not to put marine squads on board ships going through the area? Thats what marines were made for?

well that's liberals for you. it's fine and dandy to use our (the USA's) military as security guards, but defend national interest...hush your mouth.

btw, i just read an article about piracy attacks being on the rise off of the Venezuelan coast. in fact this latest attack resulted in the death of a 61 year old man, guilty of nothing but anchoring out.

isn't venezuela the home port of Hugo ChumpA*S? be still my heart....!

I'm sure you'll find that there are a few intricacies about putting military personnel on board civilian ships such as turning that ship into a legitimate military target as a ship of war, and also with taking jobs that can be handled by the private sector. However, having a strong U.S. military presence in the area can't be a bad thing since the U.S. and France seem to be the only one's taking this seriously. What really needs to happen though is for the shipping interests and their insurers to start arming their convoys and put pressure on NATO & their home countries to put out a kill order. The U.S. and France seem to be doing theirs parts and then some.
P.S. A guy getting killed while anchored out doesn't exactly rate military intervention from a foreign power. Maybe having his family call the local police chief would be more appropriate.

Even necessary. If every crewmember of evey hijacked ship sued his employer they'd find it more cost effective to protect the vessels than to ransom them.

I feel that working on a ship as crew, the employee takes on a certain level of known risk to start with. A ship could sink at anytime and the crew members life could be lost. There is probably more risk of that in general, then your particular ship being taken over by pirates. I don't see it as grounds to sue the employer though.

Unless you happen to be routing unarmed ships through the Gulf of Aden. The guy is only asking for $75,000 because he doesn't want to go back to sea without an armed escort- not really what you'd call greedy.

It's one thing to hire a crew to move a boat where they may run into unforeseeable circumstances. It's another to hire the crew to move a boat that has a hole in the bottom on the assumption that, as long as the pumps hold out, the trip should go fine and I'll save a bundle by not having the boat hauled and fixed. The terrorist threat is foreseeable and avoidable.

    Hi,

    Well put Ken and NYCAP.

I for one certainly don't go to sea expecting the thing to sink at anytime more than I expect my car to crash every time I drive it.

Yemeni Navy frees oil tanker, kills three Somali pirates
    12:21 | 27/ 04/ 2009

ABU DHABI, April 27 (RIA Novosti) - A Yemeni Navy unit has freed an oil tanker seized in the Gulf of Aden and killed three Somali pirates, a Defense Ministry source said on Monday.

The empty Qana ship was on its way to the Yemeni city of Aden when 16 pirates hijacked it on Sunday.

"A Yemeni Navy commando unit stormed the hijacked ship at 5.30 a.m. on Monday, killing three pirates, injuring two others, and arresting four," Yemen's 26Sep.net website reported.

Four Yemeni officers were injured in the clash.

Lets hope the Russians don't bother to take them into custody. How about the old pirate "walk the plank" justice. Let'em swim for shore
