en Thanks this is just what I wanted to look at. Finding the combiner behind the panel that turns power on/off on the engines, gen and house was quite a surprise. The only reason I unscrewed the panel was trying to track down the overheat sensor cable chase only to find this located behind the panel. I do believe the battery charger is bad and needs to be replaced but we will know more late next week when it arrives by boat. Thanks for all the support it is appreciated. Skip
The charger is toast. It's usually either the power supply or fuses. LEAVE THE BREAKER OFF. I have seen many Newmar's fail and when they do, they either overcharge the batteries and fry them, or send AC current to the batteries and fry them. Newmar will rebuild your old one but that will take weeks. Ward's Marine Electric is a Newmar dealer in Fort Lauderdale and has almost all of the models in stock, call them Monday morning and overnight it to Boat Harbor. (Or fly there and pick it up, you will have to fax or email them a copy of your cruising permit so you don't pay duty). Disconnect the charger leads from all batteries before changing it, or be super careful you don't short them out on the battery charger when changing it. Get your old one rebuilt and keep it onboard as a spare. On a 2007 boat, I had to replace both Newmar chargers 24v and 12v and then the new 24 volt charger 8 months later started going bad as well. I cannot tell you how many I changed out under warranty around 2004-2007, they seem to have gotten better since then. Your Cabo has a battery isolator that will allow the engines to charge the house and other banks, but it is slow to charge. The house batteries on your boat are not all that large either. What I would recommend doing in the meantime, is holding the battery parallel down for 5 seconds and getting one started, then wait 2 minutes then get the other one started and let them idle for 30-60 minutes each day to keep the house and other banks charged in the meantime as many things come off of the house bank and also the engine bank a few things do as well. The Pathfinder is what is switched by your battery parallel switch and that is what allows you to parallel the battery banks together for emergency starting. When you hit the parallel switch on the dash the Pathfinder combines the banks for 5 minutes.
Capt J, I have removed the old one and have a new one being shipped. Thanks for the info. Like you said in removing the old one I accidently had one of the battery cables hit the charger with the ground. Welded one of the connectors and had to replace. Have them all taped off including the 230vac coming in to charger. The engines are on a different bank (2 batteries) than the house batteries (4 batteries) and haven't been affected by the house voltage drop so yesterday we fished for 9 hrs so house batteries got a good charge. Will crank boat up everyday and let it run for an hour to charge house until charger comes in. Thanks for the info explaining the Pathfinder and how it works. Okay now to ask about my new engine issue while trolling yesterday. While post it separately.
Battery Charge update The charger arrives today (Sat) so hopefully by end of day or tomorrow will have it installed. Also have 115v freshwater pump coming MQ3-45 as the small attached pressure tank has become saturated and wants to run all the time.
Installed the charger this morning. No issues all is up and running and batteries almost charged. Also changed out the fresh water pump (MQ3-45 115v) with new one. Small pressure tank on backside of old pump became saturated and wanted to continuously run. Will try to repair once back in Florida.
Good to hear everything got fixed. It always seems that you have Murphy's law and only get problems on trips to the Bahamas.
Yes it was nice to get everything back in working order for a nice Fathers Day. Capt J, I think the reason is we don't use the boat enough during the year and these things catch up to us when we get to the Bahamas. Appreciate all the advice and support. Skip
I'd recommend calling Newmar and seeing what they want to rebuild your old one and have that done. I had a 24v 95amp rebuilt by them and it was a little over $600 plus shipping. Yours should cost less.
Followup. I sent the Newmar charger back to be rebuilt. Received it back this week. $472 Now I have a backup.
Hopefully you'll never need it. But, having a backup you can install in an hour on a trip if it goes down compared to the royal inconvenience of not having one might be a blessing one day.
