The only problem with Yanmar 315 we have had, was with the Mercruiser drives, but this seems to be with a shaft so it is pretty bullet proof. Nice boat!

About beer bottles, it says the same as my survival kit... :)

Sorry Lars, I will stop the Swede Bashing:)

Good news on the Yanmar 315s, looks like most of the newer boats use 'em and the older boats has some engines called the "Beast" by GM...?

Joined the Albin forum to pick more brains over there.
Thanks to YF for steering me in the right direction.

A lil gen-set may be lighter than a bunch of batteries and panels and run the A/C better.
Still don't see the room for 4 and dive equipment.
I remember loading down my 28x10 with dive equipment. Had to change stern drive prop before dive trips.
Then change back to the cruise prop for just the two of us.

250 hours on a 13 year old engine?

Find the model number and serial. ask a yanmar shop to pull up the factory history.
I thing the larger HP blocks had some teething problems.

It was overhauled, for some reason, after 900-1000 hrs.

Instead of that Key Largo boat, now driving across the state tomorrow to inspect a 2004 Albin 28 TE in Sarasota.
Supposed to be clean, 1 owner, all service records available, etc.
    My kind of boat...

I may have to instal an auto pilot and a huge Bimini top over the act deck, with solar panels to feed the batteries. So I can sit indefinetly at anchor with cold beer and cool music.
We shall see tomorrow: First time up close with one of them Albin 28 TEs.

Nah, not really planing for 4 divers on a regular basis.
Would have planned for a bigger boat then.
    Perhaps 2 divers and 2 wife's.
    Or 1/1.
2 or 3 dive buddies for 3-4 days would be great, we shall see.
I quit diving some years ago but want to start up again.
Like a midlife crises biting me in the arse: Now 58.5 years old. (But only look 36-37, at the most)

To add a genset on a virgin boat would be more work and $ than I need and not much benefit. (Been there, done that on sailboats)

4 golf cart batteries, 200 watts of solar panels, a solar controller, a super efficient fridge/freezer and a high output alternator on the main engine and you are set for weeks at anchor with no noise, no fumes, no oil/filter changes and no raw water cooling problems.
Been there, done that, good life.

Your so spoiled to be happy on so little.
My wife has to have A/C. I like lots of fresh water. Everybody wants ice.
I like my old movies. Wife watches new smut on later TV. Of course, have to cruise these nets.
R/O, A/C, T/V, Internet, Brain dead movies. I got into boating to get away from this stuff.
Spoiled I am. two gen-sets, Inverter, more batteries I can count, 4 engines-- 5 alternators, 2 air compressors, 6 A/Cs (7 soon), two R/Os, two ice makers, wide T/V, 4 computers, 3 kats, and no telling whats in that pear tree this week.

Please take me diving with you. I don't even like ice in my drinks.....

    Done deal.
Looks like your boat has everything. A tiny bit of maintenance on all that?

    Trying to stay below $100k.

I think you can do much better than a 28 Albin for what you're price range is. The Albin is just way too small. Load it up with 4 guys and 4-8 tanks and etc., just too small. Check out a late 90's Searay sedan bridge 44-45'. 3 staterooms, nice cockpit, cat 3126's, big swim platform to dive off of etc. A 36' Hatteras SF is also very roomy. Let me think of other options.....

Nah, you are thinking too big.
I want to keep it small and simple.
Doubt there will ever be 4 divers, 2 maybe
Tired of big boats and big boat maintenance.
I do most of my diving in St. Croix anyway, fly down there for free in First Class, rent a jeep and go diving.
This here boat will be for Bahamas and FL Keys goofing off trips with some occasional diving, probably more like snorkeling between the beer breaks.
As for the budget, keeping it low so I can pay cash, no loans. Payed off mortgages on my houses and condos, now going for early retirement with no bills and very little maintenance.
Single diesel, check. Straight shaft, check, Bimini in 3 hours, check..
The Albin 28 seems to push all my buttons but have never seen one up close.
Going to inspect one today. Either I walk away or I fall in love.
    Interesting times ahead.
    Stay tuned

Check out the island hopper 30'. It too meets what you're looking for and is designed to carry the weight whereas the Albin is not. They're designed as commercial dive and fish boats. I'd take that over a Bertram 31' or an Albin anyday. Should cruise around 20 knots with that power.

There is a 1996 one in NJ for $69k with a rebuilt Cummins 370HP with 150 hours on it and rebuilt transmission. http://www.boattrader.com/listing/1996-ISLAND-HOPPER-Flybridge-102516730

There's also one in Marathon with twin cummins for around $98k. I think I'd rather have twins but have a friend that has been running an open one with a single 3126 for 15 years now. They're a no nonsense commercial boat with none of the frills, which sounds what you're looking for.

As a bonus, he can do 1/2 of the Great Loop to get it home instead of trucking it. Striker looks like a very nice boat, how it ended up in MI is funny.

Aye, thx for the ideas Gentlemen, but a bit too late.
I inspected the Albin 28 in Sarasota, then made an offer.
    Accepted...
Survey and sea trial shortly, then bring it home to For Lauderdale.
There use to be a canal thought the swamps, is it still there?
If not, a cruise down the Keys. Is the shortest through Marathon?
Thx again for the help, I'll have to buy you guys beer and take you cruisimg with champagne and bikini girls:)

Yes, there is still a "canal", through Okeechobee.
