Moonen 84' "Moon River" Returns Home for Major Refit

’s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands: Moonen Shipyards, builders of a full line of motor yachts up to 150 feet, is pleased to announce that one of its “pocket-size superyachts” has come home for a truly extraordinary refit, well beyond the usual “tuning up.” Launched in 2003, the Moonen 84 "Moon River" (ex-"Moon Bels") has a new owner who, following two season’s experience, asked us to remodel her to his very detailed desires and specifications.

Moon River was quite different from her sisterships to begin with, having an advanced PLC-based monitoring, VIP and guest cabins with ensuite bathrooms, two crew cabins, and an arch-supported mast to open the sun deck space. Her new owner is in the commercial shipping business and therefore knows the way of a ship. As a result, he asked Moonen to rebuild and upgrade Moon River extensively, to change her original unique character to suit his plans, which will begin later this year with a cruise of The Netherlands and Scandinavia.

On the technical side, the major work consists of installing zero-speed stabilisers. Moon River is in fact the first Moonen 84 displacement yacht with the system, which has been made possible by the well-planned installation of synchronizable 28-kW generators and upgraded hydraulic system. Other work includes a new shore converter, new anchoring system and winches, and new stainless-steel work by Moonen daughter company Inoferro.

For navigation and conning the yacht, Alphatron is installing an entirely new, highly sophisticated, navigation and communication system, and Moonen is modifying the flying bridge layout for greater efficiency. New electrical installations are by Alewijnse Marine Systems. All other technical systems will be refurbished and returned to like-new condition, the yacht will get new teak decking by Bloemen de Maas and she will be totally re-painted by Klaver. Below, Art-Line Interiors is revising the styling to create an ambiance suitable to the new owner’s desires, with new colors and fabrics. Technica Nova is installing a new Bang & Olufsen entertainment system.

The Moonen 84 series was drawn by René van der Velden Design over a round-bilge displacement hullform by Stolk Marimecs naval architects. The series, of which eight have been launched since 2001, is powered by twin Caterpillar diesels. She has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and is built to survey by Lloyd’s Register. The refit, or rather “rebuild,” began in November 2008, with arrival of the yacht. She was hauled out in December, the work was begun in January 2009. Moon River is scheduled for re-launch in June 2009.
