The Lürssen "Al Salamah" was owned by a member of the Saudi Royal family before being sold to an owner form Bahrein . This Marriotti is reported to be owned by OMAN.

Its true that "Fulk Al Salamah" is used as a support/shadow vessel to "Al Said". Nonetheless, even if the Mariotti is to be called "Fulk Al Salamah", it doesn't necessarily mean the older one to be dismissed, as it may still be kept as a shadow vessel but under another name. It has already happened that a vessel is kept in use, but under a different name.

Just a guess f the rumours I've heard, nothing confirmed.

What I find as confusing is why make it longer then the current royal yacht "Al Said" if it is not meant to be the flagship of the fleet...??

Recent new sources that I came across, suggest that the 136m support vessel "Fulk Al Salamah" built in 1987 has been renamed "Aldhaferah"

If this turns out to be true, it then would further prove that the 164m "Mariotti 131" project may be soon named "Fulk Al Salamah"...

I feel that this new yacht might beat out Dilbar for the highest volume.

I do not believe this Ship will or can be classed as a yacht. Fulk Al Salamah is enlisted in the Oman Navy (Royal fleet) as an Auxillary ship. And this ship if going to Oman will not fit into the Large Yacht Code or the Large Passenger Yacht Code (36 Pax max). If she will enter the Omani Royal fleet, then either as an Aux vessel or a passenger ship. So the record will most likely stay with Omar /Dilbar.

Another site is stating that she is named Fulk Al Salamah as stated here. She's going to be one massive vessel. To HTMs point above, it may not be technically classed as a yacht but is traditionally considered to be one, like Al Said.

Should this be qualified as a Yacht like Dilbar or a Shadow/Support vessel?

I think it's a yacht. It can be included in the debate as to whether royal yachts should be taken into consideration.

It is of minor importance what a boat or ship is called or concidered to be by the public. As far as rules and regs are concerned, the only thing that counts is its classification. The classification tells how the ship has to be built, what type and number of safety equipment has to be built in and and to be present. And it tells the crew requirements and that both in numbers and qualification / training.

If you are using a 100000 lbs truck as your grosery getter, you may call him so but it is still a truck, simple as that. There are several larger "yachts", especially those Greece built ones, driving around in the Med. They may be called yachts but by classification and usage, they are commercial passenger ships, means in reality, little cruise ships.

By civil classification and under IMO rules, Fulk al Salamah can only be a passenger ship or a special ship (like offshore vessels). When enlisted as a military or government vessel (state ship / yacht) either a passenger vessel or a auxiliary ship, may be as the former British royal Yacht Britannia as a Hospital Ship. If you look closely at the latest pictures of Fulk al Salamah, you can clearly see, that many military specs have influenced her external and internal design. As the former Fulk al Salamah, she will carry protection forces with their equipment, additional entourage, support personnel and bunker for the state yacht. That will not exclude the possibility for hosting Royality or VIP guests. As Oman is a member of IMO and Marpol and recognizes MCA codes, Fulk al Salamah will be one of the above.

Btw. according to IMO, the new Dilbar is classed as a passenger ship but I would still call her a beautiful yacht :).

The ruler of Oman lives several months a year in southern Germany (in 2015 about 8 month). He owns a complete street with several estates in the little town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. During the hottest season in Oman, he comes to Germany with an entourage of up to 200 people. The inhabitants of Garmisch-Partenkirchen really feel like being occupied as his limousines and body guards / servants are very present in the streets but the local shops do love him. They make most of their annual income by his tribe :).

Will say, the ruler of Oman is well known for always travelling with large entourage. He needs a support vessel when going to sea :D.
