It all boils down to Burger's need to remain financially viable and continue operations. For companies like Burger, where high quality is the norm, it may be difficult for them to let go of highly-skilled and experienced workers. Their website still has a job listing for experienced marine mechanics. Instead, they may consider letting go of clerical and non-essential positions.

as a employee of Burger I will say we are having drawings made for a few new styles of yachts,we do not have any new orders right now so thats the reason for the lay offs.the 30% figure is wrong.we are building a boat for the dnr which is a very short term build, and we are finishing up another yacht that will launch in sept, then if we don't sign anything the majority of the work force will be laid off it will be more like 70% this will all turn out ok in the long run,I just hope that with out any call back dates we don't lose any of our highly skilled work force, most of us cant afford insurance on $366.00 a week for unemployment,

I have been with Burger for over 10 years and it is the best company I ever worked for,the guys really put their hearts and soles into the boat. hope for the best

As everywhere else, it is hard enough in Wisconsin. We do not need any more job loss.

History tells me "Bush " did not introduce the "stimulus" package...he introduced the "toxic asset relief package for banks" different package and actually condemmed by Obama....perhaps I am misinformed being North of 49 ??

Throwing money at a problem, no matter who screwed-up, is easy to do but never a good thing to continue.

It's a bit like running an old wooden boat. You can patch things up and make-do and mend. At some point she will have to be hauled out and a full refit undertaken.

Anyone north of the 49 must have felt that in the last 10 years. Ouch!

Don't even try. Once every while our friends from north of the border in the west need to give a shot to our president who didn't bankrupt the country in an illegal war nor let Wall St. steal the life savings of half the world because they were his friends. There's a good excuse. I think they might drink the same water as Sarah Palin. Now back to Burger. I read recently that 50% of the people in the recreational boat business are out of work. Anybody notice that there is no trouble getting slips anymore. Another layoff we don't need, especially 70% of a yard like burger. Someone better start doing some progressive thinking.

"They" evaluated nothing. "They" published an opinion piece from a guy named Riedl who is with the Heritage Foundation a conservative, religious "think tank". What else would you expect from such a source? - a fair opinion no doubt but not a rethink by the Journal. Just equal time.

Back to Burger. O Tempora! O Mores!. But the recent excellent YF feature on Dutch shipbuilding features busy yards while in America, Trinity and Westport to name two keep pumping them out and building more. So we can't blame it all on the economy or cheap Asian competition.

Burger is an excellent yard so what's up? Poor marketing? You rarely see them advertise. If it wasn't for a couple of excellent YF reviews of their launches we would hardly notice them anymore.

The banks, north of 49 did not need bail out...we did not in essence have a recession in the West, in fact, housing prices have risen steadily in the past 10 yrs. Our Government did not spend willy nilly on goofy programs and did not try to cure employment by actually creating hidden unemployment ( Massive Government jobs)
The proof of the pudding is on your plate...wake up America, you are not the major world player you once were....the POTUS is an apologist for your Country's past success.
I do not understand how so many can stand by and watch the Government gradually dismantle the concept of capitalism and that which made your Country so great, your Universities turn out socialist wimps who feel the world owes them a living.
**** shame , that's what I think....am really just trying to help you know..

Well put. If only Americans could see, about our country, what the rest of the world is seeing and telling us.

You should run for president so you could run this country the way you'd like. Oh wait, You are NOT a citizen of this country. Therefore you opinion is completely irrelevant. Maybe you should look into how things are run north of the border. On THAT subject I'd be interested to hear your views.

Things North of the Border are going very well..as usual the proof of the pudding is right there...those who cannot take constructive analysis of a situation are doomed to dogmatic thinking. Lets hope the majority of your fellow Americans will take the Country back from those who have their hands very deeply in the citizens pockets. Canadians really do love your Country and when the situation arises we have always helped when we can even though we are a small bit player in the overall scheme of things

    Sniff, sniff.

    Ed?

    Have you trodden in something?

I told you to take the Jack Russell for a walk earlier in the mornings.

Oh no, I'm mistaken. It's a whole world of evil smelling political rhetoric you've stirred up.

    Thanks Bud.

Easy there. Whether or not he is a citizen of this country his points are valid.

I agree with him totally. Everything this presidency is implementing is damaging the countries financial future. Income taxes are going up for each income bracket next year. The healthcare is costing companies 10% more, so guess what they're going to employ 10% less people. If the cap and trade bill passes, 30-40% increased energy costs mean most companies will not be able to manufacture goods and be competetive against foreign products, so guess where they are going to move even more of there manufacturing? 75% of the people do not want what is going on, and congress and the president is supposed to represent the people, yet they insist on passing things we don't want. Socialism does not and has not worked in any of the countries it has been implemented in, and is only going to make us less competitive against the rest of the world.

The economy is in shambles here in the US because people with money are not hiring people and not spending nor investing it because there is too much uncertainty of what's going to get passed next and how much it will negatively effect them. So therefore more people are staying un-employed.

For Sarah Palin hope springs eternal. What amuses me is that while Bush spent us into oblivion for 8 years Obama is vilified because he hasn't been able to fix it in one year with a "just say NO" obstructionist minority. I say bring Bush back and make him king. I've got no children to worry about. Now about Burger. That is the subject here isn't it or has the thread been hijacked? How many executive and marketing heads are on the chopping block or is it just the workers.

Yeah..........Obama is doing a bang up job! It's the Democratic Senate and Congress that is responsible for most of the mess this country is in. And I believe Obama has over spent Bush by a large margin since he's been in office, and lets not forget his immediate response to what's happening in the Gulf right now.

Can we get back to Yachts now?????:D
