Great post/article on the Grenfells. I enjoy reading about the wooden cruisers manufactured in the 50's and 60's. We had a brand new 1966 26' Century Raven Flybridge when I was a kid. Very similar styling to the Grenfell. Lapstrake hull, sharp angle windows and profile. Beautiful boats that are sadly disappearing from the scene.

Thanks goes to Brian for scanning and posting that historic treasure from his collection.

That wee trawler looks like it's either trying to going faster than 8 knots or is climbing a wave.

OMW what is up with these very long exhaust pipes? Looks rather weird.

    Hi,

Those will be fitted specifically to try and reduce the amount of sootm rust and other junk that lands on the deck of many dry stavk yachts when they start up and get going.

By having them out the side like that stuff that comes out tends to go straight over the side and not land on deck, cushions, tenders etc

Back in the day the Lady Catherine (Windridge) used to cover its exhausts with burlap when starting. A bit of work, but the boat looks better and the neighbors were happier.

Not only boats, I have had an incident in the IYCA where people on the dock got a good dose of black rain, the yelling and screaming could be heard from inside the engine room!!!!!

On this boat we had a fish net frame where the nylon was replaced with chicken mesh and it was lined with AC Filter Material, we called it the witches hat it was not always possible to use it when Gensets started automatically but we managed to use it most of the time.

We also used to burn off the pipes with LT Soot Release which helped a lot.

Hi OMW, we were obviously both out walking at the same time yesterday, except I was on the north side of the channel in Ambleside. I watched both the Nordhavn first, then the Feadship. It was a beautiful day for both walking and boat watching!

    Best regards, Brian.
