Your complaints about mtu are exactly what I hear from boat builders and owners. And they charge significantly more per hp then cat does for new motors. Hope the new cats eat into mtus dominance in high hp motors. Upgrade a new build motor from 1900 cat to 2600 mtu adds $1 million. Obviously some dollars are for shafts and struts but majority is motor cost. The builder I'm close to doesn't like the motors and all the warranty bs they put them thru.
The C32's are one of CAT's best engines. No inherent known issues with them, they just run and are proven. Provided you change the aftercoolers every 6 years as part of the maintenance.
Amen. Put over 2000 hours in 5 years on a set with nothing more than oil changes, a couple of sets of impellers, one sensor and one ECU (only $2500) I miss them already. “New” boat has 16V2000
We haven't had any problems with MTU's. Have them on three boats. However, others have complained. I think part it just the high horsepower in some cases when comparing to others. However, Sportfisher's have always been huge CAT fans and the idea of larger CAT engines being available is exciting to them. This replacement is not surprising at all knowing the builders and the owners and their preferences. I think it's also very significant that this is being done with Jarrett Bay. They continue to grow and strengthen relationships while Hatteras, just a few miles away, has been through a lot of uncertainty and a change of ownership.
Gregory poole cat dealer is literally next door to JB. Sportfish boat owners are looking for powerful, compact and reliable motors regardless of who builds them. Reliability is a huge issue. These motors get run 10 to 12 hrs a day, everyday while on trips and breakdowns cost many thousands of dollars in room reservations, airline tix, and other costs as part of a canceled trip. Motor manufacturers that continue to produce a motor with known defects yet look the other way are part of the problem. They all do it. Some are worse than others. Hatteras is a big heavy boat, think cat was looking for a test boat that would perform well with new power. Sports car vs pickup truck analogy
There is a set of 2400hp C32B's in a 65' Hatteras Carolina already. They perform very well, are quieter, and have lots of power. I've yet to run them. I ran a hardtop 65' GT with 1900 hp cats and cruise was 34-36 knots and WOT was 40 knots full fuel/water.
First test run with MTUs was a bare boat , no tower, lighter on fuel , empty water tank etc…light boat and streamlined. New test, with tower and a load. Heavy boat and resistance. Hence the difference.
Probably can repower with the C32B's for the cost of the MTU rebuild, plus gain all that extra er space. Not to mention service almost everywhere!
I anticipate over the next few years, MAN and CAT largely taking over the recreational marine market in engines up to 2600 hp or so and the market for the MTU 2000 series declining while MTU continues their domination in larger horsepower with their 4000 Series, 1163 Series and 8000 Series. We just installed 3 MTU 2000 series, 2600 hp and happy with them but was really the only choice, but it's not been long that anything above 1800 hp or so meant you had to go to MTU.
I agree that the higher power engines in 2000 series MTUs (namely, the 16V) will lose some market share in the near future, but only because it's hard not to, coming from the dominant position they enjoyed so far. After all, they were years ahead of anyone else in recognising that the demand in this power node was going to increase, and they invested accordingly. Both Man and Cat efforts look feeble in comparison, because neither developed a really new engine for that segment. I mean, let's see. MAN is now squeezing 83hp/liter from their V12, with a 2000hp total output for which it's unrealistic to expect any other relevant increase. Cat just pushed their 32L block from 62hp/liter to 75, and even assuming that they will in the future keep up with MAN in the race for higher specific output, they would reach the same 2600hp output as the current MTU. On the other hand, MTU with their 16V 36L block, is now at "only" 72hp/liter, in spite of a 200hp higher output. So, if and when they should reach the same specific output as MAN (which I think is more realistic than for Cat, for several reasons), the very same block would have a 3000hp output. Bottom line, yes, of course the 2400hp Cat will steal some sale from MTU. But if they aimed at becoming the new big name in that segment, imho they should have done what MTU already did years ago, i.e. bite the bullet and develop a new block. Then again, that's a VERY expensive process, compared to pimping something already available. With the risk of jeopardizing the engine durability, but only time will tell, obviously...
The reality is to MTU and Rolls the loss of business will hardly be noticeable, to MAN the gain will be modest, to CAT Marine the gain could be significant especially among the SF group. This all simply a matter of size of their beginning share.
After as is said and speculated; Duetz is the best far and smokes MTU and Kitty Cat ( Aka Inch Worm and Moth) Good old Detroit Diesel is always in the mix. Then there is General Electric Diesel engines… Will it ever stop ?
To anyone with an ounce of salt in their veins, whether a sailor or a trawlerman, to see this 70' US mad thouroughbred run is pure Joy! I would Start the video at 5:12 then re-watch...
Can this alcohol influenced, late night , pot stirring baseless rant be removed? My apologies. Will be more inclined to keep my mouth shut. Or is there away I can remove it?
Report it to the moderators and they might. It didn't stir much of a pot though because it was so incoherent and seemed from another century in some of it's references. I figured it was written before MTU acquired Detroit Diesel and before GE had all their troubles and I did gather the opinion Deutz was the best but no builder I've bought from offers them so that was a bit irrelevant. So no need to apologize. None of us even got excited by it.
Just another of your humorous post, no harm done. How does Duetz stack up against the well known diesel engines? Seldom the brand mentioned.
Well, I made myself “ cringe“! Lol Stumbled into one post that didn’t think Very highly of the some what current production Duetz engines. Basically the idea was to “run from them “ Otherwise I really have know idea. To the original, informative post, who would turn down an invitation to take a spin on this boat ?!?! Truly incredible vessel to me .
