Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 2013 FLIBS

The biggest Hope of everyones who lives in or visits Fort Lauderdale is that you don't get caught with a bridge up delaying your travel by automobile.

There are 12 opening bridges on the New River and ICW alone.

In the City of Fort Lauderdale known affectionately as The Venice of the Americas there are a grand total of 227 bridges most of which are fixed.



For those of you who hoped to see more classic yachts at the show I caught what I think is Kinnship a 58' Chris Craft built around 1968 moored at the Venetian Condominium just North of the Hall of Fame Marina.



And how is the Sea Gull of Cayman as an example of the classic enclosed fantail motor yacht?

This 131' Feadship was built in 1980 and has obviously been babied as she looks to be as beautiful today as she was when launched 33 years ago!



Check out this vintage 108' Burger Chanticleer http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/burger-yacht/2941-burgers-118-chanticleer-3.html#post103547 which has had quite the colorful history since being built in 1973 for Ogden Phipps who was one of the dominant figures in thoroughbred horse racing in the 20th century. Can't you just imagine the stories when Chanticleer and Secret Spot get together and talk.

A trip down yacht builders row was an incredible experience being able to look at models of built and yet to be built yachts put you right there on their fantails.

It is had to say who was my favorite because they all had spectacular offerings so I will let you decide which you like best.

First we have Fincantieri's fantasy design Fortissimo a 475' gas turbine driven by 4 waterjets that will cruise at 18 knots being capable of speeds in excess of 35 knots. She will carry 16 owner and guests with a crew of 48. Her gross tonnage will be about 7,000 tons to include 7 decks. And believe me the plans for her interiors are just as incredible as her exteriors pictured here.







Mondo Marine's model was just as impressive although of a different design genre. The M60 Luca Dini design will be 196' with a top speed of 19.5 knots and will cruise at 18 knots. Oh how I can see sunning my slim svelte self on her sky deck with one of those fancy umbrella drinks to sip on in hand!

I am sure FLIBS is great, it's only a long way to the US. I visit most of the European boat shows. It's definitely a great atmosphere to be in a boat show and surrounded by boats.

Feadship had a great booth displaying a number of models the most exciting of which are of their new 2013 Feadship Future Concept being called the Feadship Royale, designed to mark this year’s ascension to throne of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and a Fast Displacement Hull Project called Kinesis

The Royale is taking what they did with glass on Venus to a whole new level.



The open glass compartment shown that begins at the bow will continue up the side of the yacht.

The area that is depicted as clear plastic with X marks will actually be more open guest space like you see at the bow.



The yacht will have many accessibility features built in such as the ramp that you see running up the side of the yacht from one deck to the rear of the next higher deck.

Aside from making it easier for wheelchairs and walkers to go from one level to the next it will actually make quite a spectacular walkway for everyone to enjoy!

Kids with Big Wheels and skateboards are going to have a blast!!!



This is the bow of Feadship's 42 meter Fast Displacement Hull Project Kinesis which will include this unique bulbous bow, a new sleek shaped hull, and a water foil at the stern.



This foil assembly is one of the unique Fast Displacement Hull features that adds lift and efficiency to the stern.

The model of Feadship's Satori was so good you felt like you were almost there on the ocean plowing through the waves of the ocean blue!



Blohm + Voss had the most futuristic concept yacht and cool yacht builder show room at the show where we see the famous yacht A in the background and a model of their awesome concept yacht designed by Zaha Hadid in the foreground.



The architect had this to say about his design, "The overall design is informed by fluid dynamics and underwater ecosystems, with hydrodynamic research shaping the design of the hull. The exoskeleton structure of the upper section is an interwoven network of supports that vary in thickness and lend a natural aesthetic to the yacht’s external appearance; evoking the organic structural systems of natural marine formations and connecting the various levels and decks of the ship seamlessly via expressive diagonals."

All I can say is beam me up Scotty!!!




This is the 148' sailing yacht Y3, being built by the Dutch shipyard Holland Yachtbouw due to launch in 2014 that features an elegant exterior by world-renowned Dixon Yacht Design while her lovely and spacious interior is by well known Rhoades Young Design.



One of her unique features is her telescopic lifting keel that extends from a draft of 12.5' for access to shallower ports to 19' when under sail.

Well you can talk about futuristic concept yachts all you want but I will take a yacht designed by Jon Bannenberg and built by Oceanfast in 1966 like Perserverance II any day of the week!!



At 123' with a draft of only 6' this space ship can take you to the best cruising grounds and ports of the planet.



She was another collaboration of Bannenberg, Naval Architect Phil Curran, and Interior Designer Sam Sorgiovanni that always ended up being something iconic that your minds eye can never quite forget!



Some say this is because their creations are just plain ugly and too far out.



But then there are others who find the never before used shapes, public space configurations, tender placement, design elements for design elements sake, flying wings and foils to be things of great, unforgettable, and timeless beauty!

Did you get on the 93?

That Hatteras looks so much made in Italy on pictures, minus for the flared bow.

Its a bit of a disappointment, and I am saying this as an Italian boat fan, but from Hatteras you would imagine something different.
They have so much heritage in yachts as they do in sportfish boats that giving that old design a modern twist would IMO work more to there favor.

The Hatteras 100 RPH is not ugly, actually is very nice yacht, but from them I would imagine something different, that's about it
