Save Rorola Margie McCoy I will offer to spend the time and investment to restore "Margie McCoy" if I had some potential investors or a museum willing to assist in the endevour. I am an engineer, woodworker, mechanic with a passion of old wooden boats. My wife and I have restored a Egg Harbor and have enjoyed every minute we put into it. If anyone knows someone who would like this yacht when complete or a museum who would keep her for years, contact me, I will see what we can pull together to keep her part of history for NC and the east coast yachting world to enjoy.
I'd suggest possibly giving the folks at Gar Wood a call as they not only oversee larger restorations, but they also have contacts who would have the means to undertake such a project. This might have the seeds of a collaborative opportunity. Tough timing on it right now though, considering the economy. Then again, with people out of work and looking for work, it could also be great timing for the individual or group with the right ability and foresight. the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, RI or Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY are also potential resources for finding the right interested parties.
Classic ELCO lost in marina blaze Tragically, the beautiful Classic "Hermione" was lost in a shed fire at a Washington NC marina. In the early morning hours of Jan 7th, 2011 a quick moving fire engulfed more than 2 dozen boats including the 1925 Elco 56' motoryacht. Luckily, there were no fatalities or serious injuries as the dock was home to quite a few live aboard boat owners.
So what happened to the Margie McCoy? She´s still for sale, right? I just hope that someone with more money than common sense falls in love and gives her a second life. She is definitely worth it. But she needs that wealthy geek who is able to throw his money where his heart beats.
The last time I saw the "Margie McCoy" on the net, she was marked as "sale pending". I looked today and she has vanished. She is also not in the soldboats database. So maybe she sold, maybe she didn't sell and has been taken off the market. In her most recent condition, she is/was a handful.
Thank you , Eric. Last time I saw her for sale was this january. For about 17.500 USD as I remember. Considering the price the buyer would have paid that for the lots of original fittings and got the boat for free on top. Now 3 years of time, a good source for quality wood and equipment, a few good guys and 150.000 bucks and he might have a jewel.I would have been tempted myself but my boat allready swallowed my budget for silly things. Really hope that the guy who bought her has a realistic idea of the project he started or that, at least, grows into it before his budget for the project runs empty. For thing like that I´v learned that some over-estimation of your skills an abilities helps against the fear, but you should get that steep learning curve.
Here is the lovely Elco "Southern Cross". She was spotted June 16th at the ACBS show in St. Michaels, Md. Photo by YF member maldwin.
Elcos As a kid in Maryland's Eastern shore, my family had a boat in a run down old boatyard in which there were three Elcos. This boat yard is on the Lankford Bay, up the Chester River from Kent Narrows, MD. It was owned by an old guy who took me under his wing. One was about 40 + ft and named Liberte the second was about 32 to 38 foot called Circe and the third, a much bigger boat , was called Nokomis. The Nokomis may not have been an Elco. I lost track of these boats years ago. The Liberte owner died and his son took it North, I think. It was well kept and running when it left home. It had a fold down bunk , IN THE ENGINE ROOM, for the mate to sleep on!!!!! I can't remember if it was a single or twin screw. The Circe only stayed at the boat yard a few seasons and was never really kept in great condition. This boat, I am sure was a single screw. The Nokomis was a more beamy and longer than the first two. The owner had a couple kids that I sometimes water skied with. One boy was named Sam, but the other's name is lost to me. The owner also had a wife that, looking back, used to wear a white bikini that would about drive a 13/14 yr old kid a little nuts. She was pretty to boot. She embarrased me to death in my innocence .......... This boat was kept pretty nice as I recall but it did not stay at the marina long. Anyone ever cross paths with these boats? I imgine they have all been lost but I'd smile to see a picture of any of them today.
Of those 3, it would appear that "Liberte" a 1929 Elco 50' is the lone survivor. Here is a bad photo. "Circe" was a 1924 Elco 46', "Nokomis" was a 1927 Elco 50'. I find no recent evidence that either still exist.
Thanks for that info. The Circe that I remember was not as nice as the one you pictured. As I recall, going back 30 yrs or so, it was a smaller version of that boat, no bright work to speak of and a really small aft trunk cabin. Any idea where Liberte resides these days ? Anyhow, thanks for the update
DOH...... My Dad loved those Elco's. The Liberte was kept up by it's owner and it seemed he did a pretty good job. I am glad to see it still floats, Thanks for the picture
Elco 26 Hi to all I have an Elco 26 Builded in 2002 İn Turkey İstanbul I just wanted to share here. I like her too much All the best Furkan Olcer
Here's an update on Liberte' She was recently hauled at a boat yard in New Jersey for some repairs. She is looking quite nice.
that is good to hear. When the former owner, the man I knew, passed away, we all sort of expected that the boat would languish. Glad to see we've been proven wrong.
