Duffy Electric boats....?

    Hmm, good idea spraying water on the belt.
    I had noise and belt problems.
    Tried belt-spray, not a good idea. Cleaned it off.
    Got a new belt on Amazon or eBay. Made a difference.
    Then I focused on alingment of motor and pulleys.
    Finally got a perfect alignment in all axes and the clouds parted, the sun was shining and all was well on the Duffy.
    This is low tech but still, spend a few hours getting perfect alignment, noise be gone, heat be gone, less power required, etc.

    You could wire 4 in series and 2 in parallel and get 24 volts or 3+3 in parallel and series between them and get 12 volts. Typo

    I have two speeds on my switch. Slow and fast. Is the motor using 24 volts for slow and 36 for fast? Im just trying to figure out if my wiring is correct. Its working so Im guessing its correct although not efficient.

    Aha, that is how Duffy did it in the olden days: 2 speeds only?
    Basically an on/off switch at 2 different voltages.
    Do you have a controller at all?
    Later models have a rheostat throttle and a fancy controller made in Italy.
    (Same controller are used in forklifts and golf carts but have to be programed by Duffy for Duffy boats)

    Wow, more corrosion. It causes resistance and voltage loss.
    Seems easy access however.
    Look for corrosion on the cables under the insulation also, sometimes it creeps up and in there. (Especially with exposure to salt water.)
    New cables may the solution, solder the new connections on, then coat with Vaseline.

    Wire brush all the connections, a small brass wire brush on a dremel works great. Then spray them all down with Corrossion Block.....or the Deka battery terminal spray is excellent also and like $5 a 12 ounce spray can.

    You can see the 36Vdc config. Looks like 12Vdc taps from the top and bottom 12.

    At long last the clouds have parted, the sun is shinng and all is well on the Duffy !! What a diferance 2 new pulleys and a new belt make. One question for you however about belt tention. I got real fimilar with belt tention using the old worn, glazed belt. With my new belt it " feels " right....a little give when you push on it with your finger....doesn't bounce or flop when under way...not too much tention on the shaft, bearing heat etc. Only the amount of belt dust you'd expect for a new belt. BUT...I'll get squeal when backing into a strong current along with a strong wind but this is only at 100% trottle. Or tied up to the dock a bit of squeal in forward at W.O.T. No squeal at W.O.T. out and about, only with the resistance of the dock. I tightened the belt to the point where it felt on the verge of being too tight and still squeal in those to extreme conditions. I put the tention between the two positions and am thinking all is fine in the Duffy world and I just need to forget it....whats your expierance been ?

    Should be no squeal with correct tension and correct alignment.
    Did you clean the new pulleys before installing?
    As for tension, not an expert either, I did the "feels right" method.
    Also used the heat sensor gun: I the belt is slipping it will heat up and squeal.
    Try "breaking-in" the new belt a few more days, it could make a difference.
    If you have dust flying form the new belt, check alignment in all 3 axes.
    After you have done that, do it again.
    (My motor would change position after I torqued it down, it took quite a few tries to get it right.)
    Have not touched anything in a year now, once it is good it should last a long time. :cool:

    I am so embarrassed ! It's not the belts but rather the dripless shaft seal I installed.I forgot about the water trick so today I let it squael and strayed water on the belt...NO CHANGE IN NOISE TONE AT ALL !! Its a cavatation/ water flow thing at those extreme conditions, even with the vent tube I installed. I have a big zinc right near the stern tube behind the prop. Where the carbon seals against the rotor there needs to be good water or they make a high pitched squael....sounds just like a belt !

    Nah, no buyers yet.
    Been overseas this week taking R&R in the old country and never renewed the eBay or Craig's list ad.
    No rush to sell the Duffy, new boat is delayed. Now it is a broken exhaust elbow, before that it was something else. Not sure he wants to sell.

    Good news on finding the noise.

    Correction !! Today I " burbed " the shaft seal while running to confirm that was the squael, I took the shaft seal out of the equation completely for a moment.....still had the squael ? I lifted the back seat and started to listen and behold its coming from the cutlass bearing area under water. I think I've really found it at last!

    May be " prop sing " as a while back I filed the plastic prop thinking a sharper edge was better? Sure would explain why I get the noise in the water but not in the driveway !

    Could also be cutlass bearing if your shaft is not aligned. In a boat with an internal combustion motor, you'd probably never even hear it. Some electric motors make noise as well when they've got a load on them and it is normal.

    Thanks Capt. J , good point! At the moment, for several different reasons, I'm thinking prop however. I need to 1 ) Confirm it DOES NOT do it out of the water which stronly would point to prop (2 ) If so take the prop off and back her in the water ( that will be a sight ) but of course still connected to the trailer. ( 3 ) Rev her up and see if the sound is gone...if so its the prop.
    But do you over rev. anything, or hurt anything, if you give her full throttle with no prop ? ( 3 seconds is all I need to tell )

    With an electric motor I think it will only turn so many rpms period and not hurt it without a load. Not sure. It could still be the cutlass bearing with the prop off, as with no prop there is no load on the shaft......you might not want to even worry about the noise if it's not that loud as it might be normal.

    You'll know what the problem was/was not then.

    You may be just chasing sounds that are there. Charge the batteries, get some luv on board, pour some champagne (rum preferred) and go for some rides.

    It's not like your going to fail in the gulf stream. Get er goin....

    If you file the edges razor sharp they will get that much more vulnerable when you hit stuff in the water, dings from small debris which could lead to cracks, etc.
    6-7 weeks ago I hit something, probably a submerged coconut or a palm frond and knocked a blade of the plastic prop.Whole lot of shaking going on and I though something was stuck in the prop. Limped back home on slow power, dove the boat and found my new 2-blade prop, sheared off right at the hub.
    Ordered a new prop.
    Duffy sent the wrong one, but fixed it with overnight delivery.

    Some light rumbling from the cutless bearing is normal but noticeable on an electric boat.
    (Get the same on a sailboat when sailing with transmission in neutral and prop free-wheeling, but of course all the stink-potters on this forum would never know. :D)
