Machine shop recommended Against the head rebuild...they would have to build metal up around the valves where it was hit. Said they would do it but very limited ittry ed warranty...biting the bullet for a new head...mechanic said he would check bearings anyways while he is in there and replace if necessary so i.got that covered also
Head must have really been eaten up past the vale seats. Yep, It's gonna hurt the wallet but you will be far ahead on a new head. It's great to push da throttles up with confidence. If your tech with the bore scope is still available, pull the air covers and look up to the other engines valves and liners. Hot valve seats are easy to detect. Polished liners also. May save another head if you look and determine today or this fall to rebuild or reline the other engine.
Ralph That's what I've been preaching since this started. Big mistake by not looking at the other engine .
If the bottom of the rod bearings look good, And the top of the main bearings look good, the red-neck (cost reduced) plan would be put new bearings in only the bad side. Half cost of all bearings.
Going to have other motor head redone this winter regardless....bearings will be checked and if any issues, all will be replaced...I only plan on doing this once! It will be done right I can assure you...too expensive to play this game again and again to save a couple hundred bucks
Click the picture to see it all. You will see where 4 exhaust valves should be surrounded by a smooth surface. 1 valve missing and a smooth surface lost also. The valve dropped into the cylinder and was beat to pieces between the piston and head.
Roger that cap!! Btw, while I was researching parts, i came across the DieselPro website. I found stuff a lot cheaper but my mechanic said it was Chinese junk and dont use them...ever hear of that?
Diesel Pro in south FL? I can not recomend them. I have heard bad stories. My local DD shop has never led me astray and they say avoid them and avoid ANY aftermarket diesel parts. I took that advise long ago. Since, always factory parts in anything my guys work on.
Back at my desk, just got a call. 8V92 has <100 hours and liner failure. They pushed out, deformed and split. Not a high HP model. NOT DDC parts. Not a DDC shop. Trying to get more details on the shop. Owner, shop and supplier in an urine contest.

They ve been around for a long time I doubt they aell Chinese parts. That said my only experience was selling them my dead 8V71s when i repowered a few months ago... they were the only shop that would give me a few hundred bucks each and pick them up
