bike rode to the beach in Nantucket last year, early june... coudn't get in the water beyond our knees. Funny think is that a seal popped out just a few ft away, he looked really surprised to see anyone even trying to get in!

The water in the east end of the harbor isn't too bad, but if you were by the inlet, or worse at the ocean beaches, I hope you counted your toes when you came out. :D

Have you ever dropped by the Seaport Marine yard, just on the east side of the drawbridge and down Cottrell St.? A lot of history in that old shop, but not a square wall or floor to be found! It's a bit of work to go upriver that far and pass the RR bridge only to have to spin in a narrow waterway, but it's a great place to dock - especially with all of Mystic right there for kids to explore.

I know that they used to take boats up to 85' or so upriver there. What are the current rates at Noank if you don't mind me asking?

That's where I usually go into on lunch runs. Very convenient, nice people and a few steps to the draw bridge. Just be careful when you radio in as I once ended up on the radio with the Mystic Seaport dock instead.

You'll see our old Huckins in the first deep slip downriver from the travelift. A crying shame that the old girl is nothing more than a floating cottage these days.

Since they are owned by the same people, we also have first right of refusal on the face dock there in case of a storm. We went up last September and sat for a few days while it blew 25-35 from the east.

I don't know what the rate is for transients.

Well, I just got a rate to compare with from a post on a different thread:
Published transient rates for Brewer Capri in Manhasset (a first rate marina) is $2.00 per ft. per day; The Waterfront marina in Sag Harbour which is probably one of (if not the) most expensive marinas on Long Island is $4.00 pfpd, Saybrook Point spa & marina in Ct. is $3.50 pfpd.
Is the N/E expensive? Of course it is if you want prime dockage. The more you compromise the cheaper it gets. Such is yachting.

    Scott,

are you heading all the way to Boston? Nantucket is a must, although a bit $$ it's worth it. George is the harbor master at the boat basin (great guy).

Old Saybrook, Connecticut is a really nice spot too. There are two marinas just inside the CT River entrance, Saybrook Point which has a nice hotel and just before that is Harbor One Marina. Essex is just up river and is a wonderful place and you can take your tender in to Hamburg Cove which is beautiful.
Old Saybrook is about a two hour drive to JFK and about 45 minutes to PVD.

Dock & Dine is a great lunch stop right there next to Saybrook Pt. and not as fancy. There are a couple of marinas by the I-95 bridge. Essex Boat Works upriver is an excellant yard and the Essex Island is a real pretty spot although they can get a ton of gnats at night on the back side.

I arrived in Nantucket yesterday evening, i'm always amazed at how beautiful this place is. I stopped at Sag the day before yesterday, I prefer Nantucket...

the boat is staying on a mooring for the summer, very nice alternative to the boat basin. fraction of the cost but also more privacy and better view. The town has a good dinghy dock or you can use the launch service. There is also a delivery boat that will deliver whatever you need (from the morning paper to water). With a large inverter bank and a watermaker, it works real well.

    Hi,

If you are planning on running the watermaker all summer you might want to read what applies if your were a UK Registered Ship, I would think that the USCG Has similar rules.

    This was extracted from:

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT MERCHANT SHIPPING NOTICE NO. M.1214
RECOMMENDATIONS TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION OF SHIPS
    FRESHWATER STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS
Notice to Shipowners, Masters, Fishing Vessel Skippers, Shipbuilders and
    Repairers
This notice supersedes Notices Nos. M.410, M.633 and M.901

4.1.3 Freshwater from low pressure evaporator or reverse osmosis
plant— Water from such plants should in general only be produced when
the vessel is at least 20 miles from land or remote from any risk of
estuarial pollution which in some sea areas can extend well in excess of
20 miles from land. The sea water suction to evaporators or reverse
osmosis plants should be separate from other sea suctions eg machinery
cooling water inlets, fire pump suctions, etc and sited forward and on the
opposite side of the ship from sanitary or bilge discharges.

indeed it depends on where you are and proper filtration is critical.

the problem up here is plankton which requires frequent filter change/cleanup... major PITA!

and yes, Nantucket is probably almost as clean as ocean water, I hear you're not even allowed to use a washing machine or dishwasher... heck, they even have security camera over the garbage can just in case some terrorist would dare drop a glass bottle in the wrong bin!! :)

You have to use clear garbage bags so what you dump can be seen, and watch what cleaners you use.

    Hi,

Been there, Done that in Alaska 10 yrs ago. If I went there again I would just buy a few hundred of those wound string ones and change them, 10 yrs ago we didn't have too many and had ti jury rig a cleaning system.

Wouldn't kid you Pascal. You can get them at the market in the square or they have them at the boat basin. They also have that soap that's about as strong as plain water for washing the boat. Don't even think of letting a drop of fuel or oil touch the water. Nantauket is a great place to visit, but it's a rough place to live for the summer unless you have a few million extra $ in your pocket.

Has it been busy up North this year? Is the economy slowing down the yachts visiting this year? We are heading North on the 13th of June. Boston, New York, New England, Etc. Got some prices on moorage and it is more then double of Fl. I don't mind if I park at a work dock or behind a house. When We are on the boat we will be out exploring and most of the time anchor out. Just need a place to park while We are not using. Hard part is we are 106'. Anybody know of a spot for a few months?
