One aspect of the trial that I think would be a bigger deal if this trial was in the United States is the fact he and the blond were drinking wine during that romantic dinner right before he drove the ship onto the rocks.

    Costa Concordia

The tragedy of Costa Concordia has caused another life.

A professional diver (spanish) died during preparation work for the fastenings of the buoyancy tanks on the starboard side of this scrapheap. He got caught between large sheets of metal while working under water.

According to the news, the police is investigating against the italian subcontractor due to lack of safety measurements during that work.

Video of the Costa Concordia wreck site as it appeared in early January 2014. The video, which was filmed using an aerial drone, provides an unmatched view of the Costa Concordia as it rests on underwater platforms following the September 2013 parbuckling operation.

    ReFloating starting Monday

The salvage team have confirmed that the Concordia refloating operation is set to go ahead starting on Monday, July 14. As was the case for parbuckling, commencement of the operation is subject to authorization from the Observatory and also depends on the weather forecast over the next few days.

    Monday is on

"the salvage team has successfully completed the technical tests and if weather and sea conditions will remain favourable the refloating operation will commence as planned on Monday morning" said Costa Crociere CEO Michael Thamm

    Hi RC,
I've been watching this, on & off all morning.
    Thanks for the tip.
It is hard for me to perceive the movement but it does look like it has come up a little bit.
You think a meter or so ?

It looks to me like the tugs have an ever so slight pull on the rig.

    Interesting to watch.

The Concordia refloating was completed this afternoon. Works are in progress to complete the last operations to prepare the Concordia for the departure and for the mooring in Genoa Voltri Port.
Tomorrow morning, Wednesday July 23th, Titan Micoperi will begin the departure maneuvers for the Concordia to leave from Isola del Giglio once the ferry from Porto Santo arrives at 8.30. Operations are planned to be completed in about 4 hours. The wreck will be disconnected from the towers and connected to two tug boats at bow.
In the meantime the results of the analysis performed on the sea waters confirm their quality. After Concordia departure, environmental monitoring will continue in the upcoming days. The activities for the environmental remediation will be started immediately, with the sea bed assessment, the removal of the towers, and the first tests on the removal of the grout bags used to create the false sea bed on which the wreck laid before the refloating.

Lets hope that beaten ship will arrive at her drydock in Genua without any further incident. She has to pass some very deep waters towards her final destination and the scrapping will cost some more 100 million Euros .

A spokesman from Costa Cruise Line stated a few days ago, that the complete tragedy of Costa Concordia had caused 1.500.000.000,- Euros (more than 2.000.000.000,- US $) of financial damage to the company, not including the srapping of CC in the drydock in Genua, which would last more than a year. He stated, that Costa Cruise Lines almost went bankrupt on this accident but the company is back to its financial status before the accident, means, the insurance companies or somebody else (taxpayer?) must have paid for this mess.

Something is really wrong in this world

Well that's what you pay insurance for, accidents.

I would think they could get the ship scrapped for free. The US Military sells old destroyers and such for a $1 and the scrapper makes their money on the scrap metal they get from the ship.
