My daughter lives in Charleston and said that yesterday a freighter lost steering or power and luckily got through the middle of the span of the Ravenal Bridge. I don’t know what conclusions to draw from this. I believe within the last 5 years or so a ship lost power in the Cape Fear and ran aground. Are these large ships hackable or is loosing power somewhat common occurrence.

Actually, The ship lost throttle control and was in run-away mode.
The port did close the bridge down just in case.
There were some injuries with some small boat damage from her wake but nothing serious.
The throttle was under control just after she made off shore.
Currently anchored just off shore, arrested, pending investigations.

When you consider the vast number of ships plying the oceans, there's relatively few occurences.

I just saw a video of a concrete mooring pier being ripped out of its foundation by the wake. Not sure what happened to the ship that was to it, hopefully the other piers and lines held up.

hard to Believe they didn’t have a emergency shut down, whether air or fuel.

A shutdown is what happened in Baltimore. Lose power - lose steering. Maybe better to cause a little damage than a lot of damage.

Shut down, lose steerage. Drop anchors also will likely divert the path more so than stop the movement.
