There are a few big egos involved and it's a detriment to the forum even with the knowledge they bring to the table.

I think that everyone can readily see what is known (not much) and what is unknown (most of the story). The speculation and conjecture is nothing more than conversation. Through it some may have learned about that area, Bertrams, what to do and what not to do. It's soft news which is what also fills most TV news broadcasts. From it we learn a little while waiting for the real news. No harm. Happy Thanksgiving.

No kidding huh? The boat sank, we won't know why until the boat is found and salvaged, and potentially not even then. If the boat is found and raised, it will take the experts, engineers and such, in the abscence of any overt evidence like paint from the bouy, probably a couple of months to work out exactly what failed to start the chain of events. The guy has done the trip multiple times, and without evidence, I'm not going to hang the guy just yet. My experience with Ferretti would actually favor my personal speculation as a construction failure, but I won't hang them just yet either because there is no evidence to hang them with. Heck, this may remain unresolved for years or forever. It's a big ocean and there are strong flexible currents that move around in that area so it's very hard to predict where it went to cnsidering it could have reached a submerged state of near bouyancy and could possibly be in the Gulf Stream slowly sinking through 400' right now.

    That would be unfortunate.

Yes it would because it would be nice for all the owners and potential buyers to know definitively whether they need to worry about the issue or not. Doesn't mean it won't be the situation though even if it is unlikely.:( Hopefully they will find enough of it to answer if it was in a collision with the bouy or not.

YF receives love mail from adoring fans...

A little research revealed this was a UK based yacht broker. I can only assume he has a Bertram to sell. Whatever the case, I find his last sentence moronic. When I declined to do a review on the Bertram 540, citing too many irregularities, I walked away from any support we would ever see from Bertram.

One more thing, FWIW, as we approach 250,000 monthly readers, coming here for reviews and discussions by highly qualified people, does this guy really think one thread amounts to a hill of beans in our overall stats?

    I think not.

You'd expect a yacht broker from the UK to have a better command of the English language.

He's a yacht broker- it seems from his letter he has an angle to cover/protect. The majority of posters here have no such need to protect anything, and only post to share/gather information that is needed to be well rounded and informed.

    Hi,

I think you will find that his native tongue is not English. You do not have to be born and bred in the UK to be UK based just as the same applies in the US.

I think he had a few too many beers at lunchtime at the good old English Pub before he wrote this.

Has anyone heard any updates on this Bertram yet? If it's in under 100' of water they should have had divers on it by now, at the very least......

I woke up in the middle of the night with a vision of a wreck lying on the bottom at 33-24.18N 78-33.49W ... it was really strange, there was a white sportsfish lying upright in the sand but I couldn't see the bow. There were sharks swimming all around it, and what was really wierd, they were all wearing nice suits and carrying briefcases.

That would probably have those sharks dreaming (and the cap having nightmares) about position N33*825.781' W078*33.155'

I think most Sons of Magellan would have nightmares about this incident.

    N33*825.781' ??

One of those yellow obstruction markers I referred to earlier. This one on a path from Cape Fear inlet to the point you referenced, about 1.5 miles back and almost right on that line. Anything more than a dream involved in your picking that point?

    Ed,
I'm not near a chart, but do those buoys mark an existing wreck?

    Just marked as "obstruction".

My source did mention to me that it is possible that the captain hit a buoy marking a wreck/obstruction as the course line ran very close to it. Speculation now, but may be possible (just as anything is at this point).
