Bertram 630 Sportfish Sinks?

    Oh no.... Now you ruined that nice one I've been spinning on for some days.
    I like wooden boats they move so silent and discrete in the sea, I'll continue my search for a Colin-Archer in good shape.

    I heard that at least 30 year is what a well built classic can serve without falling apart, at least up here in Scandinavia.

    far, I'm just putting pieces together and quite frankly, I'm curious as can be. All of this damage does not add up as to all being caused by one single failure. There is always a series of failures which causes a catastrophic event. An air speed indicator failed due to ice on the sensor which caused the pilot to retract the flaps which caused the stall which caused the plane to crash into the field. It wasn't that the wings fell off, that happend when it hit the ground. In a crash investigation, every piece tells a story. Put all the pieces together & the mystery can be solved.

    Thanks for the picture! I was wrong about the struts from the top or tower attaching to the console. There must be another reason why it was ripped back from its mounts.

    Maybe...but if it did pierce the boat, that pole, made from PVC, would have snapped and the radar reflector would have been knocked off. Neither happened.

    Was there ever any info published/found regarding the statements of the F/V Pacifics that rescued the Captain and Mate of the Bertram?

    I'd love to hear what shape the 630 was in when they arrived on scene...?

    That's the Starboard engine control. Those are called "Palm Beach Style" Controls.

    Many Captains turn completely around during a long battle with a large fish that requires backing down. I believe the idea is that these throttle controls are easier to use when your back is to the helm.

    I'd rather have them side-by-side IMO, just like the Affinity 90's.

    DK why that matters, but it's a Harley 1450cc Super Glide. If you're referring to boats: other people's (I let others throw their money into that big water hole). My regular gig has been a 50 Viking for the past several years, but I also run and teach on several dozen different boats each year.
    BTW Bluefin, you might want to look at that mast again.

    More on topic, I've been entertaining a question if anyone here have experience with something remotely like this happening upon plunging into a wave. Like, at 40 knots. it could explain the foredeck bonding and hull failure in that area... or can it?

    Please read for content. I never said "ALL Bertrama are c--- boats."

    But IF they are found to be building boats that are not safe to use for their intended purpose and don't feel the need to correct their mistakes, then yes, IMHO they should close their doors and stop endangering peoples lives.

    I for one would rather be out of a job then getting payed to build something that could get an innocent person killed.

    As far as all your flag waving goes, Bertram is not even owned by an American company I believe. And another owner could still build them here if they chose to.

    Also in case you haven't noticed, it's a multi-national business world, time to get used to it.

    You've mentioned your brand of automobile before, and justified it by the great warranty and low cost. It doesn't happen to be made here in the US, but that doesn't seem to bother you as much as retaining domestic manufacturing jobs does in this thread.

    I have first hand experience from my past life as an offshore powerboat racer. This video isn't me but take a look at the first boats footage. Case and point of a stuff with structural failure which looks exactly like that of the Bert. This is a C class boat & given the conditions is probably running in the mid 70 mph range. Yes its faster than the bert but with a fraction of the drag surface impacting the water. Think of the weight that the bertram was pushing when the nose went deep into a wave.

    I believe some of my TVs are Japanese and some of my clothes are from China. My next car will probably be a Chevy, but I don't see what any of that has to do with this thread. I am not an isolationist and I am not defending Bertram. I just don't want to see more American boat building gone due to rumor, innuendo and speculation. The facts will come out. Let the chips fall where they may at that time.

    That 90 Affinity looks like it was designed and built circa 1986. Ugly IMHO, and had to post it here since one cannot comment in the review thread.
