    I think if you look at the windlass manual, they all recommend against putting that load on the equipment. If properly backed, a cleat is going to be quite a bit stronger.

    Ideal seems to suggest the chain stopper as the reliever. Backing plate would need to be substantial.

    True and true.

    But the chain stopper gives you, or should I say the chain and anchor, no relief from the snatching effect you get in a blow when the boat comes tight on the chain/anchor like a proper snubber does. That and as has been mentioned the snubber keeps the chain from moving around on the roller and or/hull and making noise at night.
