Thanks to everyone for the help. I've never gotten a response like this on some of the other forums that I've visited in the past :)

I'm not worried about employing a second crew for the shadow vessel. I think that the shadow concept is pretty perfect for the purposes of maintaining a smaller length principal yacht in order to enter some harbors. I've become dead-set on this idea. I'd like to talk to the person from YES who I believe is on these forums...

Due to the concept of the shadow, I'm not sure how necessary it would be to actually custom build a yacht. Of course, I have a feeling that after I buy a yacht, I'm going to want to make minor changes and I'll probably want to have it designed just for me. So I'm sure that I'll take the advice here and purchase and then begin plans for a custom build. Hopefully, though, I can get it perfect on the second rather than the third :)

I'm still working on compiling a list of manufacturers to look at within the next couple of weeks to try to get some idea of where I want to put my money. Over the last couple of days, thanks to you, I've been looking at Feadship and Westport.

I have chartered many yachts and have been on many privately owned ones, so I do have a general idea of what I like. The vehicles on the yacht - even on the shadow vessel with the problem of getting them on ground - continues to be a huge problem and I'm trying very hard to figure that one out. I agree that the ideal thing to do would be to rent them. However, the vehicle that I don't want to (can't) leave behind is an armored Maybach. I really need to figure that out.

I will indeed look at the sponsors on this site for some more ideas. Also, I will be at the Ft Lauderdale show (I was at the one in Miami earlier this year).

Speaking of that, we need a way to identify each other (if you want to) while at FLIBS, if members want to hook up. How about an official YF hat, something easy to be put on/off. Many of us have to wear our business shirts, so a YF shirt may not work. Have to get ready early.

I should think the shadow would be allowed along side a warf long enough to offload the Maybach. Even if it was required to return to an anchorage. The tricky bit would be if you needed to secure the Maybach back on board each night?

While that would be ideal, there are several ways around that, so it's not necessary.

    Mr. B -

"Of course, I have a feeling that after I buy a yacht, I'm going to want to make minor changes and I'll probably want to have it designed just for me."

Try "before" you buy your yacht.

This is a significant part of the Westport programme. We are committed to getting it right the first time, and I believe we have been very successful at doing so.

We will not materially change either hullform or the systems (whether they be propulsion, mechanical/electrical/plumbing) as they are purpose-designed and built for a high performance, utterly reliable yacht.

However, you may choose your amenities in terms of interior or deck layout, navigational equipment, audiovisual gear, fabrics, stone, furniture, and so on right down to your formal dining silver and crystal.

All this happens as a part of the contract and the build.

    Now, second point:

You mentioned Feadship; great company, and I mean it.

However, they build metal boats. Electrolysis, metal fatigue, oil-canning.

My comment is this: The Boeing Company is presently putting their entire corporate future on a composite jetliner, the "Dreamliner".

Westport already made that decision, vis-a-vis yachts, thirty years ago.

If you are concerned about security, bringing your own car, especially something like that, is asking for trouble...

An armored G-wagen may be useful in some remote places, but otherwise you hire such services.

i think so too, in other cases take a look at paul allens octopus - it may be out of range of money - but having a hangar where you can put car's and helos may be the next idea. also i think when you're already thinking about building a custom yacht you should take a look at lars's (amg) treads like this one - there are a lot of nice yachts :)

I'm aware of that possibility. It doesn't have to be the Maybach. From talking to everyone involved, we don't want to get in a situation where hired services aren't available. This continues to really be the only problem in my decision making process :)

P.S. - I've been roaming around the forums reading as much as possible over the last couple of days, and I like your designs quite a lot. We might have to talk soon :)

I've seen it. Unfortunately, it's not "intimate" enough for my tastes. I don't want to have to dread walking from one side to another. That's what I like the idea of a shadow so much.

It looks like you read my mind, too. As you were posting that I was posting a reply saying how much I liked his designs :)

Where nobody can see you?

I was a bioinformatics and artificial intelligence student until I sold my first company, at which point I took a leave of absence. That was a few years ago. I believe I am still on leave of absence.

I am in Flensburg quite often actually.

Well that depends on which Flensburg you are in, but I'm assuming Germany. I'm there frequently visiting Motorola.

I think a cool enamelled lapel or collar pin would be the ticket here. Discreet, yet identifiable...

I am not a big fan of hats personally, and anyhting that could be easily identified more than a few feet away might seem garish.

Unfortunately I do not think my schedule will allow me to be at the FLIBS, but I am looking forward to the possibility of visiting the Miami show.

I delivered a 95' explorer that was out fitted to carry a "MINI" on its deck. I did counsel the client that I did not think it was good idea and to stay with the scooters but he loved the idea that his boat could do, so we did it. When he went to the med he left the car in the US, just much more of a problem then it was worth when you could rent anything you wanted. He did carry it from Savanna to Maine and used it there.

Keep checking in on this Forum, lots of good people here but you need to sit down with someone with a broad base outlook and try to define what you want.
For sure buy a boat and use it (whatever boat it is) and then get your team together and start the new boat design project. I was just on another part of this sight and one member advised to take a year to spec and design the boat, I agreed "if you have the time" if not get the first and start the design to give you as much time as you can. Depending where and what you build you are looking at 2 to 3 years unless you buy a production boat.

Just a few things to think about.
    Warmest regards,
    John DeCaro
