Thank you - just checked out that thread and saw that you spent $75k + on a single engine rebuild. Yikes... Also following your CAT repower thread with great interest.
$75k ++++ But to be fair we did virtually everything. Blowers, turbos, heads, bearings, cylinders/liners , replaced an exhaust manifold, etc, etc. And my boat is way harder to work in than that Hatteras. You have lots of room. If you decide to move forward with the HATT, or any similar boat with Detroit's, pay close attention to the engine controls and engine electronics. Whereas you can byt all the hard engine parts, none of the DDEC stuff has been made for quite sometime. You can get some items repaired by Sturdy Corp and find some things on EBay but it is all used parts. And even more difficult to find someone that knows how to work on it much anymore.
My number was just for the long block. Each of the parasitic can cost a thousand (S) extra dollars. Either set of number$, you can see it is expensive. Sadly, the 3412 is not far behind. Half of the parasites though.
$36k per engine when all said and done will cover an 8V92 not a 12v92 if you do a quality thorough job
Understood. I think we're all basically on the same page. $36k (per engine) is an estimate of parts costs and may be low. Labor and additional "stuff" will add up quickly and significantly. The consensus also seems to be that 3000 hours on either engine (with nothing more than routine maintenance) means that major service is not far off. Plus the ~4000 hours on either generator. It seems like these major items, combined with the excessive over-pricing of this boat, is likely what is turning other potential buyers off. We might test this seller with a high-5s offer and see if there's even a hope of putting together a deal. It might be that this boat, with fresh engines and new generators, could serve our needs. Or maybe we just continue looking... Again, thank you to all for the education! Bryan
Would the $35k cover the piece-by-piece disassembly of the old Onans and (I'm assuming) piece-by-piece installation of the new NL units? If I recall correctly, the hatch to access this generator room is not much larger than about 2' x 2'.
On this last Hatt, Galley up, hall way hatch between a cabin and day head, I just removed the MD4/OhNo 20 and installed NL 20 and NL 12,, in pieces. The MD4 stripped down to a short block. I have pictures of the stage from the forward hatch to the gen set room hatch. On another Hatt where the MD4 is still running, Galley down, we installed a NL 12 in pieces. Man handled the block down the steps from the wheel house, then lowered to the gen set room. My heavy crew did that, Stupid human tricks already wiped out my back years ago. My NL guy knows me and approved the installs for all warranties. Lots of labor.
Now if you deal directly with a NL shop or dealer, of course your good also. I'm just a little guy in the swamps with good friends on high ground.
No good mechanic would install parts supplied by someone else, of unknown origion, and warranty it. SO, if you're doing a rebuild with the dealer or a reputable shop, they're suppling the parts, or no warranty.....sad thing is DD only gives you a 6 month warranty on a rebuild.
