1975 42' Post Restore

    I have a different boat, similar engines. The 671 is the most reliable engine of that size I have seen. No injector pump, no electronics to fail. I'm 67 and have been running them since I was 13. If you stay out of the upper power range, you can double the time between overhauls. Excessive heat wears ring & sleeves.

    These should be the same engines I have, 310 horsepower J&T naturals. At that horsepower rating, the 6-71 should still be running when we are all dead!

    I spoke to a Captain on a sightseeing boat in Wildwood New Jersey that used to lay up near the Route 47 bridge near the Beach Creek restaurant ( good food ). I heard him come into the slip and heard the unmistakable sound of Detroits. When I asked him how many hrs. and what engines etc. etc, he told me they were 671-N's with over 20,000 hrs on them. I thought I heard him wrong but he insisted that they were never rebuilt.
    He told me they never exceeded 1800 RPM because the boat would only go so fast and anything over 1800 was just wasting fuel.

    The early 6-71, less than 180 hp (N55s), did not spin over 1800 rpm. Later naturals (N70s up) to 260 hp would turn 2300 rpm but the sweet spot was still 1800 for factory rated continuous operation.
    I believe you found an other perfect example of less h p = longer life.

    Hey Dan: What I did was cut PVC pipe in half and used the elbo for the round ends. I laid glass into the cut pipe,use wax paper on the bottom. Once you do that I used West-Epoxy and poured it into the pipe. When the Epoxy starts to dry I laid Stainless bolts facing up. I made a fiberglass box for the inside of the hull and cut four big holes in the top. I made the grill big enough so I can get my hand through it. I drilled the holes in the hull where I mounted the bolts in the grill. I was able to reach into the hull and put the nuts on and bolts and lock it down. I came out really nice it looks like the newer models.

    I ended up glassing the new engine vents into the hull and using insulation board to make my form. We ended up getting bad weather for several day and low temps (under 50 degrees), so i couldn't finish up. Hopefully I can resume next week. Here is some pictures in the meantime!

    Close up of the new airbox/vent. Temp starting dropping under 50 degrees so I had to stop adding the glass. Need to add a few more layers and shape up a bit more before we start the filling and fairing:

    Boy do I remember doing all that, I like your design. Keep the pics coming I know someone that is looking for the old vents if you want to get rid of them.

    Big job. keep the pics coming. That change will really "modernize" her look. I think there was someone on this forum looking for those vent covers a while back, I'll try to locate that thread.

    It is a big job, but i know the results will be worth it. Plus I have some good help! Just need some good weather, or I need to build a bigger tent! If anyone one needs the vents, let me know. I have 2 from the starboard side, one was cracked pretty good in a few places and is in very poor shape and canned it . I haven't removed the port side vents yet. First come, first serve!

    Hi Dan,

    I would be interested in the Vent or Vents you have. I have a 42' 79 which needs one vent for sure, but a second would be good if you have it.

    I posted a couple times over the past year looking for some.

    Tommy, will have them sent to you tomorrow. I ended up bringing the boat over the weekend from Pensacola, FL to a dry dock here in New Orleans.

    As much as I hated to put her back into the water before I had the hull finished, I brought her back to New Orleans so that it will be easier and more convenient to get to. We (father-in law and I) primed up what we had done and set her in for the 158 mile trip.



    Except for a dead battery after splash the trip went very well and she ran surprisingly well. We ran the Gulf ICWW and it was a beautiful day on Saturday. We made our way Pensacola Bay in a 1' chop running the 671Ns @ 1850 RPM with a 16 knt cruise.

    We ended up stopping in Orange Beach, Alabama for a quick top off of fuel and a bite to eat at a dock side restaurant. We then made our way over to Biloxi, Mississippi where we decided to stay over night at the Point Cadet Marina where the dock master was friendly and very accommodating. The marina is right behind one of the many beach based casinos. So we hit a sports bar inside to watch the playoff games. After some good food and drinks we made our way back to the marina for a night cap and a movie on board. A strong front moved through around 10 pm that night and between the sound of the rain hitting the deck and the gentle rocking of the boat I sleeped extremely well!

    We woke up the next morning to the rising of the sun and checked the oil and noticed that the port engine "spit" about a gallon of oil after about 4 hours of running. The starboard engine didn't even leak a drop.

    We made our way thru the Mississippi Sound in 15 mph winds with 20+ mph gust and the temp was a chilly 45 degrees (cold for us southerners). This netted 4-6ft seas once we got out to deeper waters. We found a quartering sea, but the boat ran the same at cruise a steady 16 Knots with a little more work at the helm to keep us on course. I was please to find how dry the ride was with only once did I notice spray over the bow. With that said, I still wish I had curtains on the fly bridge....it was cold!

    I had a chance to pull off the old rub rails and found some rot on the starboard side. Most likely due to whoever installed the rub rails didn't properly seal the fasteners. I also found a few drywall screws were used for fasteners. Here is a pic after removing some of the mush/rotted wood:

    Will clean this up and will have to glass in new wood!

    I'm new to Post as well. Ran a 48 Golden Egg in the early 80's but owned a Mako 25 since. Moved up to a 1979 Sport Fish. Reworked throughout but making a few changes. Taking paint down to wood in galley and adding a stove. Anyone know where I can find a good used 2 or 3 burner?
