What I find intriguing is the direct relation between online personalities and how their character so closely matches their posts when you actually meet them. I’ve had the good fortune of meeting a few YF members and I think we’ve had more fun… logged off!

The Internet has made the world a much smaller place. It removes barriers, levels playing fields and forgets the distance between us. How ironic, in this… the last of meeting places… we grope together and avoid speech.

YF is family to me. Glad to be here.

OK, one more to go. Like I said, there's a one-in-two chance of member #10k being a bot. I'm staying awake for as long as it takes...

    Hi Carl,

Isn't there some sort of process/procedure you can introduce to the registration page that will stop bots registering?

Isn't that what those funny hard to read letters and numbers are on some websites?

Or maybe a validation process where new members have to respond to a validation e mail and paste in a code or symbol you sent them in the validation e mail?

ALL of these measures are in place. Bots come in many forms. Some are automated. Some are human. I'm working on a more advanced method that will require answering a question that is marine related. Bots can't answer a question they are not programmed for. As for humans, we can weed out a bunch of 'em with a silly question, such as "is the bow the front or the rear of a boat?" Believe it or not, this will be effective because a large percentage of the hired humans don't speak English. These measures won't entirely eliminate the problem, but it will reduce it substantially. I'll work on this over the holidays, but I've got some other deadlines to meet now.
