There is that static again. Not contributing to the OP but questioning the people trying to contribute.
Need to adjust my squelch some more.

Hey RCRAPPS you need to turn up the gain on your bullshit filter to get rid of the static

6 postings compared to rcrapps 3666 postings and you're coming on here to talk about a BS filter, really???

If someone can say with as much certainty that what the OP has and they have never seen is exactly how it left the factory 48 yrs ago and someone else who claims to be a mechanic and doesn't fully understand how a starter solenoid operates then it is probably time for a few of the YF KB Warriors filters to be cleaned as there is obviously a problem with the dissemination of falsehoods.

capt j according to your comment nobody should post a reply unless they have already posted several thousand times or are your remarks just meant for comments you personally do not care for

Not at all. What I am saying is nobody should call out a member who is a mechanic and has a long standing relationship on this board, especially with words like BS, if they have nothing to back it up, just a very broad, blanket statement.

The reason RCRAPPS is saying what he is saying is because what the OP described is the standard D.D. starter solenoid setup that we've both seen a thousand times.

As for how a starter solenoid works. It's a very rudamentary switch (basically) It has a low amperage circuit that goes usually to the start button or key switch that simply remotely closes the solenoid which joins or connects the high amperage wires together to send power to the starter itself. If it usually mounted on or very near the starter.

Did you just call K1W1 a mechanic???

Those old Detroit solenoids do pull a lot of inrush current, especially when they get a little age on them. I've replaced a lot of fried dinky push buttons with the HD Cole Hersee ones and have seen many cases where the builder did install a secondary solenoid to energize the solenoid on the starter itself, probably because their standard wiring harness used 14 gauge and snaked a long roundabout way to the helm.

No I called Rcrapps a mechanic which he is. Kiwi would best be described as an engineer, although similar roles, but different

As rough as it is I would guess that the terminal with the ? will be arranged the same as the same one on the other relay as it will be for the coil that closes the solenoid.

Your battery drawing does not make much sense to me at all.

Hang on, I've seen something like this before. Your drawing is not quite rite.

I remember a dual heavy starter solenoid system on one boat, both driven by the same single remote drive solenoid.
The theory was to make sure the starter did not stay engaged if either heavy starter solenoid stuck in the closed position.
So, including the one on the starter, 3 solenoids to start the motor,,

These are separate from the battery (stb& port) parallel switch or another heavy solenoid.

I'll draw it up and submit a pic tonight.

On my older 16V92's I had a audible alarm ring at the helm when the starter was spinning. It allowed me to know when the starter stayed engaged after the engine was already up and running as in the past we had the starter continue to spin due to solenoid failure stuck closed. Just an idea to ponder...

Sorry late. Finally had to get off the dock last night to get away from work.
Later, I'll try to copy your sketch and edit it to match mine to help. I'm sure you have something like this. PhotoScan.jpg

    Good Morning,
Funny I ran across this article.
I’m the current Owner of above mentioned Boat.
Been haven fun restoring her and cleaning up the wiring. Boats on Blocks currently. Looking to Launch soon. Went to Turn the Engines over yesterday. I hear just a Click. 1st solenoid engages passing 12v to starter but nothing else happens.
Been all over the web looking for a Diagram of the Start / Stop Solenoid wiring. Anyone have one?

    thanks

There is a disc inside the starter solonoid that is probably corroded from sitting all these years. The current has to pass through this disc to a set of contacts which feed the starter motor. The stop solonoid is a simple spring return solonoid mounted on the governor.

    My current Solenoid Setup.
After I get these running I will make a Wiring diagram
    Up and post
    Thanks for the Tip.

    Issue resolved. ..
Disconnected and verified all the wiring on the Starter and Solenoids. Appears the Solenoids were not properly grounded to the metal bracket that supported them. Wiring cleaned up, Engines Turn over.
Hopefully Fire them up early this coming week prior to launch Sept 1st.
