Yes, you can replace both the transmission and v-drive with a built in transmission/vdrive combo that bolts directly to the engine. I've seen it done before on this boat. The shaft might have to be shortened, but I don't think any strut changes are necessary. Actually thinking about it, it was done, by SEARAY. I manage a 1993 with DDEC 6v92's that have the traditional trans/v-drive from the factory when they went away from these ZF units

I appreciate the suggestions, but in my case the the v-drives are 10 ft foward of the transmissions. to do what you suggest, I would have to remove the existing trans, fabricate new rear motor mounts & jack shafts, mount he trans/v-drive [may not fit beween the stringers] . The shaft angle is 12 degrees so any new unit would have to be really close otherwise major remounting of the engines would have to be done. I fear this would be a major project---having new gears manufactured in my case is the way to go

What boat and engine package are your MPM v drives installed in? In 1 of the 2 50' searay's I manage, the v-drive is less than 2 feet from the transmission. 10' sounds like a very long reach.

Personally If there was anyway you could use something modern and get away from these gears, rather than spending 20k on them and not being able to fix them in the future, that is the direction I would go in.

Update- the case that we had welded is now leaking AGAIN. The yard pulled it out of the boat. Does anyone know where a good case is? Or does anyone know of good transmission/v-drive modern units that can be retrofitted, it has 6v92's.

There are no parts available for the 250---maybe after Sandy that will change. I am working on having gears manufactured for the units. If you find something that will replace the 250 without redesigning the boat, let me know. Don"t get rid of that case.

If you find something that will replace the existing zf v250m v-drives, I would love to have any parts or units you will not be using.

You might try Casale v-drives in calif---they make some stand alone units that might work.

CaptJ, You may want to try Greg up at Rolly as he has another business selling all kinds of engines and machinery or try Oliver Jones at Marine & Auto Salvage, I think he is up off Griffin road around 441

Oliver is the one that took it apart and had it welded the first time. The boat's currently at 1st performance and they took it out and are having it welded and braced with a plate welded on. I tried recommending a swap to new v-drive/trans combo's but the owner wouldn't go for it. He's been taking the boat to first performance for a decade so it's out of my hands......but they generally do quality work.....

Got Gears? V-250 MPM 1.462:1 or the 1.33 or 1.77:1

I have the same issue with my port side velvet drive. Need Gears for v-250 MPM 1.462:1 or the 1.33 or 1.77:1. We can change the prop size to accommodate the gear ratio changes. I have a case but need to find the gears. New gearboxes for these in the 325 IV that have the internal vee are less than 10K so if your paying that to have gears made your paying too much. Can anyone help me out here???? thank you for your time. Rick

    no you dont!

I have been talking with ZF marine engineer and he says the 325 IV are good replacement. The pitch is 14 degrees but you can get them for 10K and that is brand new and they sell the mounts for them. It is a good fit they told me. I just don't have 30K with labor to change both out. I just need gears for my v-250M case and I have a case that has a crack that they say can be welded.

    Yes!!! 325 iv

send me your email. I have the same boat and the same 6v92ta with the irm 310 PL with the v250mpm attached to them. the vee is only 2 inches from the 310 and you can have the all in one unit put in that has better horsepower at 1800 RPM than the 550 ours are rated at and better efficiency. I have been talking with Roland at ZF and his engineer. The ratio with the gearbox and the vee is not combined. it is multiplied to get a total of 1.462:1 to pair with the 6v92ta that I have and the pitch is 14 degrees but they said you can adjust that easily. I can get brand new complete drive trains with efficient cat c115 engines ($12,500.00) and the 325 IV they quoted me about 11K but I have a buddy that I think can buy them wholesale) not sure. I just don't have 50K to change everything out.

    MPM V160-250 Gears (V-DRIVES)

    Hi Huckins

You stated a while back that you have located a few V-Drives. You still have some on hand or ? I busted both mine, hitting a bad marked reef.

If you have or know where I can find, please help.
    Thank you very much

    Hans

The one I was looking to replace has been welded and seems ok right now.

If both of yours are busted, I would highly recommend going to new v-drives that you shouldn't have issues with and can get parts for. I would look into what the poster above you recommended from ZF. The 250's are notorious for cracked cases, parts are scarce, and they haven't been made in over 15 years.

    Capt J.

Thanks for the info. I have been told that the ZF 286IV would be a great fit for replacement for me. As it turns out, my marine engineer has now disassembled all, lifted out the engines and drive trains, and are currently analyzing the extent of damage. I managed to locate 1 gear case in Florida, had it air transported to DK, and are now having a new case 3D scanned and CNC machined by a local specialist. If anyone is short of the small side of the gear case, that´s what I´m having machined and are able to reproduce in multiple if anybody needs ? Price is a little high though, but not anyway near the price for new gears or the likes. Anyone have 2 new cheap props, 26*26 2" shaft? /HanZi

    Hi Huckins

I had the 1 part of the case made from the 1 complete case i managed to locate. (actually in Florida... had it flewn to Denmark) and had a CNC Machinist specialized in Turbo impellers, 3D scan and machine a new case. It turned out super. Both my drives are being refitted at the moment and are now ready for Run-in test prior to re installing in my boat. I have some nice pics... see below...

We can reproduce if needed and.. I also have a spare backside case with oil cooler in mint condition. I can have this case 3D scanned and machined also.

PM or email me, can I show me email here? :

    Regards

    Hans
