But if you're under full sail, even in a light breeze, I would think the danger of capsizing or veering wildly off course or something would prohibit you from letting the ship run on "autopilot".

The fact that people do it is impressive.

And if one would like to do the same in a stinkpot, what, except the obvious rigorous ER checks, should one think of?

    Hi,

If you set the boat up for UMS operation the actual time in the ERIC is reduced markedly.

The only time things would get difficult is when something substantial goes wrong

Keeping an eye out so that you don't run over any floating debris, radar watch, transfering fuel as needed, other bilge checks.......etc. etc....

    short sleep

From what a solo sail customer of mine shared, he has his internal clock trained and timed to awake and check that all is good every 15 minutes. So rather than long rest/sleep periods, he is re-energized by multiple 15 minute time-outs. Anybody else identify with this???

UMS would be cool but even w. videocams, exhaust temp/pyrometers, actual coolant/waterflow readings, maybe a permanently rigged IR-gun at the shaft bearings plus the usual plethora of oil/water pressure/temps and amp/volt meters I´d like to do an bi-hourly manual/visual check. One thing´s for sure - the watchberth would become the new master SR.

    Hi,

You might want to read up on UMS to allay your fears.
