Folding keels come in a wide variety of shapes and configurations, but all have up until now shared the same problem of being a trade-off between the convenience of being able access hitherto inaccessible shallow anchorages and harbours, versus the problems associated with the highly complex engineering needed to operate the lifting mechanisms and a loss of internal accommodation space.
First shown at the Monaco Yacht Show 2005, the Scissor Keel™ from Humphreys Yacht Design typifies their solutions-led approach to the design of superyachts. Humphreys took as their brief the twin objectives of designing a lifting keel that firstly would present no danger to the yachts in the event of catastrophic failure, and secondly would not take up valuable accommodation space within the hull of the yacht...

If “Vitruvius” looks like it's missing a mast, it's because Philippe Briand has concentrated mainly on sailing yachts in the past. Working in conjunction with Lurssen yachts, his experience in designing sailing yachts is about to be transformed into a 180' - high speed, high efficiency motoryacht.
Built of Alustar, Lurssen’s “Vitruvius” will reach a top speed of more than 20 knots with cruising speed of 18 knots. As a by-product of its reduced weight and optimized hull, fuel consumption will be 50% less than a conventional yacht of similar size...

ACR Electronics, Inc. has introduced RAPIDTRACK - a simplified Voyage Data Recorder (S-VDR) with either a Hardened Capsule or a Float Free 406 Memory Capsule. The S-VDR is designed to record and maintain the ship's data. Like the black boxes on aircraft, S-VDR provides accident investigators with information recorded before an incident.
The RAPIDTRACK meets the IMO Performance Standard A.861(20), the MED Directive 1999/35/EC and IEC 61996. It is also EC-type approved (Wheelmark). All data is stored in compact flash memory on a hard disk in the RAPIDTRACK as well as in an external memory capsule of which there are two types.
The ACR-designed Float Free 406 Memory Capsule (now awaiting agency (approvals) records and stores a retrievable record of the ship¹s nautical, technical and safety data from the S-VDR main unit...

NEW SHOREPOWER CABLE INDICATES WHEN POWER IS ON...
Nothing is more frustrating for a cruising boater than to plug in at the dock and have no power. To help pinpoint the source of the problem, Hubbell's new 30-amp shore cable set contains a green, LED "Power-On" indicator at the end, which illuminates when power is present through the end of the cable.
Unlike LEDs on other products, the bright, green LED on Hubbell's cable is easily visible, even in bright sunlight. Thanks to the cable's fully molded design, the indicator and internal electrical connections are completely waterproof and durable. The connector end has a non-metallic, threaded sealing ring, which makes the inlet/connector interface watertight. The ends are ergonomically styled for easy handling and connection/disconnection.
Hubbell pre-wires the cables at the factory with #10 AWG wire, using copper-crimp barrel terminations for a tight connection and long life. The cables are UL-listed for the U.S...

Skylge takes to the water...
Holland Jachtbouw has announced the launch of the 141 ft schooner "Skylge". The carbon mast and sophisticated rigging for this lightweight, high-performance yacht are currently being fitted, after which Skylge will make a shakedown cruise to Spain before heading to the Caribbean. Skylge, which is the Frisian word for the Dutch island of Terschelling, is sure to be a favourite when she joins next year’s regatta circuit.
While being ideal for racing, the yacht has also been optimised for family cruises. Built to MCA, Skylge has an ideal layout for chartering, with an owners’ stateroom, VIP suite, two guest cabins and generous amounts of deck space. Designed by André Hoek, Skylge has slim low-freeboard lines, long overhangs and a modest pilothouse. Her rig follows the trend for high-aspect mainsails and roached foresails, while a lifting keel offers access to shallow waters.
