Yard time: Halloween hell or fairytale?

    I hate being in the yard. It s stressful, the boat gets filthy and for whatever reason it drags on and on and on.

    this week we did the first haul out on the lazzara 116 I took over in May of last year. It was also the first time I used APEX marine on the Miami River and they were able to get us in and out in just 4 days. We hauled out Tuesday afternoon, blocked wed. Morning and by Thursday afternoon they had the two coats on bottom paint on.

    adding the second stage on the TNT lift took a little longer but we finished that Friday late afternoon and launched Saturday morning. This is the shortest yard time I ve ever seen.

    I also had the wheels pulled to magnaflux the shafts, not wanting a repeat of the lost and retrieved prop incident back with the 84.

    I am really impressed by this yard although 116’ is pretty much as big as they can take since the canal is pretty tight, especially on one engine as we re rebuilding the starboard 16V2000. We had about 3’ to spare to turn in and out

    How come?
    The boat looks pretty far from having been used enough to wear out an engine...

    PS: great job going through that canal with just one wheel!
    I take it that the boat must have some pretty strong and reliable thrusters?

    No stern thruster, not needed. Hydraulic bow thruster which only yield about 40% thrust with only 1 hydraulic pump on the port plus a smallish PTO on one gen.

    the mains have close to 4000 hours but are 18 years old. We did the port engine last year after finding oil in the coolant and some elevated readings. Found bearing damage although the crankshaft was fine.

    On starboard We started getting traces of metal along with fuel residue in the oil samples. Then when they dropped the pan and inspected the crankshaft there was some damage incl rust, apparently from a raw water pump issue at some point in history. Bearings were pretty bad too.

    Both had passed survey but no maintenance history so no idea how many hours on the oil. Even after the rebuilds, and all the other stuff we had to do, it was still a very good deal over all

    I have a client who had work done at Miami Apex a few months ago. He (and I) were very pleased with the work they performed and it was done in crazy-short time at the client's request.

    Apex Stuart has an excellent reputation and gets high marks for the work performed there as well as the Pompano Bch. location so there must be very good people at the top making personnel decisions for these three yards to be running so smoothly. Great management just doesn't happen by luck and the Stuart yard Mgr. Kurt has been long tenured as well as Dominic at the Miami location. When the original Apex in Lauderdale had to move due the land being developed into condos the yachting community that were Apex customers on the new river were unsure of how the Miami location would work out and it's been seven years or so since the move and they haven't missed a beat, Good to see them doing so well.

    I spent a couple of months several years back at Apex Stuart having work done on our last boat. First-class operation with Kurt in charge.

    Dominic was very efficient and runs a good crew.
    I didn’t even know they had multiple locations. I didn’t know they could handle us until someone recommended a carpenter to give me an estimate on the teak for the aft deck and he told me his shop was at Apex.

    the only other two yards who could take us in Miami where Merryl Stevens and Jones but their estimates came in much much higher.

    the timing was a bit tough because of the delay on getting the new crankshaft. I didn’t want to wait till the rebuild was finished but didn’t want to go to Ft Lauderdale on one engine.

    speaking of which, I was shocked to see that the crankshaft was made in India… shipped to MTU in Germany for quality control then shipped to MTU Michigan and finally to Miami. That thing has racked up a lot frequent flyer miles already :)

    I know it normally isn't, with twin mains.
    But am I right in understanding that you did that channel with port engine alone?
    If so, I bet you would have liked to have also a stern thruster, occasionally.

    Yes, port and bow thruster only. This is what the starboard engine looked like :)

    a stern thruster would have been nice to back up on one engine…. That s why I had the yard launch us bow out

    I'm never envious of boats much larger than mine, aware as I am that larger boats=larger headaches.
    But an engine room spacious enough to rebuild the mains inside it, that's truly inspirational!
    Where's the thumb up icon when you need it? :)

    Lol. This engine room is amazing. Mechanics should charge less considering how comfortable it is :). The air con is a little weak though …
