REDINGTON BEACH — About noon Wednesday, Gene Borg was sitting at his table, eating a bowl of cereal and fruit.

Out in the gulf, something caught his eye.

Amid crashing waves and a high tide, a 48-foot yacht was creeping toward shore.

The boat crawled through the churning waters, perpendicular to a stretch of beach near Gulf Boulevard and 158th Avenue. It passed buoys marked for swimming.

"I'm thinking hey, he's getting kind of close. I thought, he's got to turn," said Borg, 68. "But it didn't turn. It just came straight onto the beach."

Borg rushed out of his house. His wife, Diane, called 911. When authorities got on scene, they realized they had a mystery on their hands.

The yacht's engine was running. But no one was aboard.

Bring that one up next time you're in a fisherman's bar in Ketchikan, Sitka, or another of the Southeast Alaska ports where the hand trollers congregate.

Fishersmen and cruisers have a totally different mindset, and Alaskans are a breed onto themselves (way tougher than this old man); just watch the Deadliest Catch. God bless them. Cruisers are generally concerned with getting home and not breaking the boat. Fishermen just want to know where the fish are running. :)

    Hi,

Found this comment under that Newspaper Article:

I am from the Tampa Bay area and now live in Isla Mujeres, Mx. I believe this is the same yacht that was reported missing in Cancun recently; The local paper "Por Esto" (www.poresto.net) had a article on it. Its a 2005 48 Sea Ray Sundancer serial #serp6249f405. It was/is registered to a Millet Arturo Reyes and owned by Felipe Hernandez Enriquez per the story. Both to be considered shady characters. It disappeared from a marina in the Cancun Hotel zone between saturday & monday and easily could have made it there in 3 days. Could someone pass this info on to Florida authorities ?

Anyone here know what the serial No of the boat that came ashore is?

This news is now coming on the CNN HLN channels. I am sure the authorities will have it figured out in no time.

well, maybe the captain got busy with the attractive first mate... that's a greater risk than running solo :)

always funny to read a headline about a yacht and seeing the picture of an express cruiser!

Based on the Mexican flag, it turning out to be the one "stolen" in Cancun makes the most sense to me at this point.

More info, looks like it may be out of Mexico. I understand the weather was pretty poor yesterday in the Tampa area, no good reason for this boat to be out in the Gulf.

"The leads they were following on Thursday all pointed to Mexico.

The owner of the 48-foot yacht may be Arturo Millet Reyes of Mexico, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. He bought the vessel locally in 2008. Deputies said they were told the owner may have been taking the boat to Mexico.

But deputies are also following leads that the yacht was reported stolen from a marina somewhere near Yucatan, Mexico. Local authorities said they've been in touch with officials in Mexico about the boat.

The Sea Ray Sundancer was beached near 15648 Gulf Blvd. around noon Wednesday. Its motor was running and no one was aboard. Deputies searched the area, fearing someone might have fallen overboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted, searching farther offshore. Wednesday's search was called off in the evening because of bad weather and darkness.

The yacht, Making Waves, is based in Jupiter and has an expired Florida registration. But it has current Delaware registration and U.S. documentation. A Mexican flag was flying at the bow, with a U.S. flag at the stern.

According to the Mexican newspaper Por Esto! (That's Why!), a 48-foot Sea Ray Sundancer was recently reported missing from a local marina. It was registered to Arturo Millet Reyes, the newspaper said. He may also be the president of the Mérida Fútbol Club, a professional soccer team which belongs to Liga de Ascenso, the second level of that nation's soccer league.

Deputies contacted the yacht's previous owner in Tampa, who told them he sold the boat to Reyes in 2008 and that he believed Reyes was taking it to Mexico.

But authorities have not found anyone who may have been onboard the boat."

Not sure if this washed ashore, probably ran ashore! This one is a Pershing 115' apparently ran aground back in July and was recently salvaged. The express yacht hit rocks in the Adriatic while cruising the notoriously shallow area in the bay of Budva enroute past the Montenegrin island of St.Nikola. Apparently she was moving at around 10-knots when she struck ground.

She is now undergoing provisional repairs at Bar in order to enable her travel to a shipyard in Ancona in Italy. Reportedly the salvage operation cost 180,000 euros.
