I don't think that's completely correct. I think he got off to a terrible slow start. He started out in an upwind leg and his trimaran couldn't point closer than about 45 degrees off the wind. His goal was apparently to finish the safety features he had envisioned while he was underway, and use the fantastic speed of the trimaran to win, then license out his inventions. Unfortunately for him the potential of the trimaran never materialized in his performance.
