I've got to winterize my Volvo TAMD40B's very soon. They have a closed loop cooling system that's full of anti-freeze. Does the open loop portion of the cooling system need to be pumped full of RV anti-freeze or does it just require draining. The owners manual shows three drain points on the block and transmission but never mentions pumping anti-freeze through it for winter storage. The previous owner ran anti-freeze through the open loop but I'm not so sure it's required if properly drained.
Late reply... In Volvo' manual they offer you options, you can either drain the engine or stuff it with antifreeze. I have same engines and we do the winterizing to the raw water side as follows: 1. On the dry I hook up a hose to the sea water strainer (get a hose that is a snug fit to the hose running to the engine). Put the hose in t a container that holds fresh water. Start the engine, shut down when container is empty. I run about 20 liters. 2. Do the same but have the container filled up with 50/50 mixture of antifreeze. Place a bucket under the exhaust so that you get all that excess antifreeze gathered up. Done, takes me about 30 minutes to do both engines.
