It seems to me that this forum is edited by the moderators! I had my post deleted after making a joke. Is this an open forum or not?
Jsceen, I removed your post, but I should have removed your membership. Of the 12 posts you've made on YF, several of them were slap-stick, uncalled for quips. I RARELY remove posts, but with you... I've already removed a few. When you first came to YF, you took a senior member to task over a simple grammar error, then you accused me of being a Nazi because I warned you if it happened again, you can take your smart @$$ elsewhere. I owe you an apology. I should have removed your membership at the time. That is being fixed now.
This is probably the best/strictest moderated forum I have seen. The hard work is appreciated by most of us. There are many forums where anything goes. Or the "moderating" is left to the general public to sniff out posers from companies. I think it can take some adjustment for people to get used to the rules here. Thanks John
Just wondering.... I have been wondering for some days now just why one of my posts was seemingly deleted. I posted it in the Yacht Names thread and the only thing that I may think of that could have warranted a deletion was that this thread is devoted to names of actual boats while my post told about what names I would pick for my still future yacht. While scanning that rules page, I cannot find any rule that I could have possibly broken with that post. I slowly am realizing that this forum is heavily moderated, which is not something bad on itself, but it makes things harder when the time comes to understand what we did wrong. Currently I'm more a forum reader than a poster. I came here to learn about yachts and that's a topic I know almost zero. I read it everytime I open my web browser and what little I may know about yachts have been almost completely from this forum. The last thing I want is to be banned, but in order to comply with the forum rules, I have to understand what was wrong and events like banning that user discourages it. So, taking the risk of being banned, could I ask why my post was deleted? If it helps you to remember it, it was the one where I stated that if I were to name a yacht, I would choose greek/roman goddesses names such as "Diosa Venus" or "Diosa Atropos". If my memory doesn't fail me, those were the names I mentioned. What was wrong with it?
This forum is heavily moderated and that probably makes it a better forum. One thing I have learned is moderators and administrators seldom like being called out in public. Not saying you will get better treatment if you air your grievances in private but the odds are better. This is totally free advice and probably worth exactly what you paid for it.
There is no risk of being banned for asking a question. I take full responsibility for my actions, or the actions of our two mods, who I have only disagreed with once in 8 years. When 3 people, from 3 different countries, languages and backgrounds all agree, that's good enough for me. Our mods are fair, polite and above all... they've been here from day one and seen it all. Anyone on YF can call us to the mat, in public, anytime. I can count on one hand all of those times, including this thread. The OP in this thread was making waves from day one. Matter of fact, he just registered under another screen name "Blow Me" with a profile that read 'anticensorship advocate' or something like that. I removed his membership again. With regard to your post being removed, I recall this. I believe it was the first post you made and we watch first posts much more carefully than others. Often, we see "one-post wonders" come here, make an irrelevant post, then never return. Now the rest of us have to read wade through muddy waters. Sorry, but we won't let that stuff stand. The Yacht Names thread is about funny or clever word play. It's not about random names. If you do a Google search under Yacht Names, you will find YF and this thread on the first page of results. A lot of people come here for looking for ideas or simply to be entertained, not for the names of Greek Goddesses.
I think the moderation is pretty good here, if it were not moderated.......some of us here (including myself at times) would end up battling in the parking lot with beer bottles.....hehehehe......
Okay. Just a comment on the quote above. That post was not my first one. My first one was my inquiry on Harth technology and my second one is also in that same thread.
I think it's important to note... Posting on YachtForums isn't a right. It's a privilege. About 100 of our senior members have built this resource. For them, posting here IS their right. They own this place! Often, we don't check their posts right away because these are folks we've come to trust and respect. If they make a post, you can bet it's informative, relevant, helpful and often entertaining. However when time allows, we DO read their posts because we always learn from them. When someone new signs up and makes a post, it's the first thing we check. We simply will not allow 8 years of collective knowledge and hard work by our senior members to be diluted by the randomness and ramblings of anyone with an internet connection. If you want to raise hell (or lower heaven), then find another forum. If you're seriously interested in yachts and you are looking for good content by some seriously experienced folks, then you found the right place.
Moderating YF is important. It allows both members and guests to share relevant and helpful information in a professional and respectful manner. And as noted by our Admin, IT IS A PRIVILEGE.
I've been on computers since '07 (late bloomer). In that time I've bounced around all sorts of forums, generally for no more than a few minutes. Most are full of ads, rants, kid's stuff and B.S. But I make it a point to check YF several times a day when possible. I consider it continuing education. The caliber of knowledge and professionalism is just so high here. However, you can count on the fact that anyone showing more than a couple hundred posts has worn their asbestos underwear from time to time. If a post is pulled just take it as a learning experience. It's nothing compared to what happens if you try to act smarter than you are. The mods are pussycats compared to some of the guys here.
Hmmmm, I'm not sure I'm coming across the way I intend. The kind of replies I'm getting seem to point at me as some kind of trouble maker and yet I just want to learn how to conduct myself. I have more questions to make, well, at least one more; but I'll send it to Carl privately.
