I have thought hard about NOT posting this new thread, for a couple of reasons. For one thing, I do not want to sound as though (as we say in Australia) I am whingeing, looking for sympathy or that I enjoy talking about health issues etc. Also it is personal. However, given the positive situation that has resulted, I think maybe some of my fellow boaters may just benefit sometime from my experience. I hazard a guess that many of us have a few things in common other than an obvious love of all things to do with boating. Many of us probably carry old injuries from boat incidents especially related to spine and neck issues as boating seems to wear on this area more than usual. I have crushed verterbrae and other issues from racing boat accident etc. Common amongst us, right? Add the creeping effect of AGE and we are all in a race to stay fit. So here it is: In January I got up with a seriously painful neck. Just like that, one day to the next. After 2 weeks went to the Dr. and was sent for MRI, Xray etc. Turns out I have crumbling verterbrae in the neck and 3 of them are bulging into the spinal chord. I will avoid the exact medical terms etc as it is irrelevant to the post. Suffice to say this is not an uncommon thing, especially with very active men as they age. Trouble is when parts age quicker than they should! Of course, out came the doctors script and there followed the painkillers, sleeping tablets etc. After 8 weeks of constant pain I found I was going NUTS, from no sleep and heavy duty prescription drugs. No fun in this. Yes, there is steroid injections into the neck but surgery apparently is not an option. Specialists told me the only other thing was "Pain Management" as this was IT! "Learn to live with it." Yeah.....right! So here is the point of this post. Out of sheer desperation I went to a very well known acupuncturist. I was a non believer and highly cynical of a positive result. I could not have been more wrong. Within 1 week I was sleeping 2 or more hours a time again. No painkillers, other than over the counter paracetomol and anti-inflamatories. 4 weeks later and I am again considering buying a boat, in other words I am confident there will be a good result. If any of you have ever experienced a back or neck injury and are SICK of the drugs and pain, try ACUPUNCTURE. It truly can be a Godsend. Thats all from me, if it helps any one else then it is worth it.
mate, i was introduced to acupuncture years ago & have used it on a number of occasions ... i 2nd your comments on it ...
Please make sure your practitioner sterilized his needles (and many do not) or you may end up with far worse than back pain. Also, talk with your kids about their activities (not that they'll listen). I did my share of stupid (and painful) stunts and am now living with the results, but what we did as kids doesn't come close to what's done today. I'm thinking that motorized wheelchairs will be a booming business in a few years thanks to snowboards, kneeboards, MX, jumping off roofs, running through fences, etc. My friend has four teenage boys and I think the local hospital is about to give him his own parking space. Those kids don't have a clue what's in store for them.
Thank heavens for that. Think how boring our youth would have been if we knew then what it would cost today. Then again, it still wouldn't have mattered, we had Vita cards with no spending limit and Dad paid the interest.
Acupuncture helped me with back pain but what really sorted it (and the migraines that I had been suffering from for years) was cranio sacral therapy....amazing and non invasive ...
Cutting edge for back pain relief, take a look at RotationIsTheAnswer.com testimonials. Amazing but true. I know about the device as it was invented by a former Navy SEAL for SEALs due to literally all of us suffering from back pain due to combat operations, heavy equipment parachute jumps, wave jumping while fully combat loaded in fast support craft during insertions, jogging with SCUBA gear on, etc.,etc. Now being used by PGA, NFL, MLB, US Olympic Center, many chiros, physical therapists, plus pro and elite athlete trainers & coaches. It resets the back and hip muscles in some way to relieve back and hip pain. Full disclosure: I bought one and it worked so well, we bought the company!
David, Good for you!! A few years ago, I went thru a similar situation. All of a sudden, one morning, I awoke and could not even move my left arm and hand. It turned out to be herniated vertebral discs C-5 & C-6 in the neck. Anyway, my orthopedist got me back to normal without surgery and no major drugs. Physical therapy and home traction did it (hanging off the door).By the way, the injury apparently came from an unexpected jibe caused by a sudden wind shift--and my left arm in the wrong place on the boom at the wrong time. I hope that you enjoy your new vessel!!
Interesting! My neck/back have had issues after racing offshore powerboats for years but then I had my major crash (total loss/Ford Excursion) on Intersate 95 a year ago. Now I have big issues aside of the 'ol crunchy neck. I've been told I can live with it or undergo surgery in hopes they "might" fix it. I've heard of the alternatives but always thought they were bs. I think I'll look into this! p.s. In the time I typed this, I had to take a break as my arms went numb. It's due to my posture of leaning forward with my head turned slightly up. You should see how frustrated I get when looking at the night sky & teaching my son about the stars & space. I quite often just lie down on my back & point. Thanks for bringing up the subject! Dave
