I am new to Yachting and my wife and I wondered what would be a good boat to own for the 1st timers? We would like to go transatlantic but could start with the Med as we are in the UK. Thanks
Hi, Your question has to be narrowed down a little. Like what size or what money? Are you planning to have crew or run it on your own? Do you prefer power or sail? Good boats for long distance cruising on your own is found here as an example; http://www.northshore.co.uk/ Both sail and power, but I would take a motor-sailer, like Fisher or this Vancouver 38.
Further Details Size between a 57 and 70 footer. Money wise, well the best I can get for the money really. It will have to be a powerboat and I will most probably crew it myself. Regards
If you are looking for a new yacht, these are hard to beat on value for money... http://www.selenetrawlers.com/NewSite/index.html
I don't think the wife would go for a trawler. We were at the SOuthampton boat show and saw the Princess range 57 and 67. More our style. The price tag of these was not too bad but we are sure we can get better for the same money. £550,000 to £700,000. Plus we want to be able to get transatlantic if possible.
If your wife don´t like to travel 7-9 knots, she will not be able to cross the atlantic on your own boat. A Princess and similar boats have a typical range of 500-700 nm at cruising speed and are not boats you make oceanic crossings with. But they can make it as cargo on special ships if you like.
Did you take a look at the new Squadron 66? I thought it was particularly well finished! Plus the fact that was hull #1 at Southampton show, which means it can only get better
The general concensus is that crossing the pond in anything less than a mega is best done with Dockwise or something like that.
In the 57-70 foot range, take a look at… Horizon 70’… http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2638 Queenship Berretta 70’… http://www.queenship.com/ Lazzara 68-S… http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2410 Ocean Alexander 64’… http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=430 Symbol 58’ Pilothouse… http://www.symbolyachts.net/Index.asp?ID=23&ID2=2
Most of the yachts mentioned so far are very nice vessels. But undershoot my personal "comfort zone" for crossing the Atlantic. The Med, of course would be a whole other story . I would leave the Atlantic goal for yacht #2, not your 1st yacht. Kelly Cook
