Some here might find this interesting. go to www.nasa.gov & click on "NASA TV". STS 122 "Atlantis" is rolling out to the pad right now. We went down to watch STS 120 Discovery launch on Oct. 23rd & will be flying back down to watch Atlantis go up on Dec. 6th
It's like watching paint dry, it goes so slow. But it is neat everytime they roll one out and pop it into space. Can usually see the smoke trail during launch down here in south FLA. Waiting for the next time they launch one southeast, instead of to the north.
You must have heard the two sonic booms during the landing on August 28th. The shuttle tracked over Marathon & right up the middle of FL between Lake Okeechobee & West Palm
My kids heard it at school, didn't know what was going on. I did look for it though, but a little too far west from my view. Someday I'll get to the cape for a launch.
Dave, I moved this thread down the Yacht Club. Sorry 'bout that bro, but I'll buy rounds next time you're in town. Speaking of... any plans to migrate south for the winter? Tom, We need to continue the conversation we had during the Furuno event, so ditto on drinks with you too. Might meet you halfway on a weekday. *** And now, returning to the thread subject, I have a trivia question... What was the name of the movie with the line "how does it feel to be sitting on top of one million parts built by the lowest bidder?"
No problemo Capt. Carl. I should have thought about it before I typed. Limited travels to FL this winter. Perhaps a solo trip for the Miami show. I'll keep you posted. As far as the trivia question, Armageddon I believe. I forget what the guys name is that said it but he is a good actor
It was Steve Buscemi who said "You know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?" Fun movie.
Dec. 6th, Shuttle Atlantis launch viewable on most of east coast! Hello all, just a heads up.... This Thursday at 4:03pm, STS 122 Atlantis will be lifting off. With it's trajectory in conjunction with sunset, it will be viewable along most of the U.S. east coast. The farther north, the better because it's a few minutes after sunset. The folks south of North Carolina will be able to see SRB seperation. Up north, the three main engines will still be burning until the main tank seperates. MECO (main engine cut off) will be off the coast of New York City. http://nasa.gov is a good place to watch the launch (click on "nasa TV") They don't cover over the conversation between the astronauts & NASA. You can also watch it on CNN. It only takes the shuttle 8 minutes from launch till MECO over New York so don't be late. http;??nasaspaceflight.com is an excellent source for up to the minute info. There are alot of nasa folks who frequent the forum (click on "forums" then "STS 122 Atlantis"). I have a newly acqured contact at NASA & received an official NASA invitation to view the launch from the Banana Creek vip bleachers (where you see the count down clock on the news). We are flying down with the kids on Wednesday to watch the launch from there!!!
Simply awesome space walking pictures... http://www.texasjim.com/NASApix/NASA pix.htm Twenty bucks says these pics weren't taken with a disposable camera!
Wow! Those are some spectacular shots! Atlantis is now scheduled for January 10th. They have found what they believe to be the problematic wiring connecter leading to the ECO sensors. Changing it is easy, getting to it is a giant can of worms.
Always cool to see space shots. But was expecting to see the Home Depot logo somewhere in the cargo bay.
Nasa officials are meeting right now to figure out their next step. Fix Atlantis the best they can out on the pad & shoot for a mid January launch or roll back to the VAB & start all over. This would mean a possible February date.
