Safari on an iPad being hijacked. Haven't checked other browsers or operating systems.

Were you using the app? Or using the browser on the web?

Not using app. Happened using the advanced search on Safari / iPad. Tried a search on a Windows based machine using Chrome, but unable to duplicate.

I've read many recent reports of malware and iOS and Safari.

I've been having problems on the boatwizard side (particularly soldboats) using windows 7/chrome. I get a few clicks in and then the browser locks up. No problems with Firefox.

I've seen some problems like this. The browsers are trying to get away from Java, some sites still need Java to run and not the browsers substitute.
