Volvo Outdrive Confession

    One of my best friends has bought new a boat on my recommendation.

    A Windy 42 Bora with a pair of Volvo D6 370hp on DPH drives.

    So much better than his Yanmar/Bravo set up of the old boat. Twice as quick onto the plane over the newest V8 Yanmar.

    Now to the confession point.........

    I've never, ever been on a twin diesel outdrive Volvo boat in my life,

    EVER

    Yep, 70% of my customers own one but I've never bothered with little 35/45 footers of that kind

    Have I missed anything?

    What you have missed is the careful attention to maintenance required to keep the diesel driven outdrives in good working order.

    That's a leading question Dave, some might suggest there is something missing now:D

    I worked on a boat that had a 9.8m Tender with 2 x KAD44's and outdrives, it went like a scalded cat, the acceleration was amazing when the supercharger clutches closed.

    Downside - The supercharger drive belts had a lifespan of around 20 hrs owing in no small part to the extreme temps in the engine bay. The replacement of these meant the removal of the fwd engine compartment bulkhead which was located behind the seats in the cockpit. No small job at any-time.

    We quickly developed a routine of replacing all the drive belts and raw water pump impeller everytime just before boss came. Never had another in service failure.

    We have them in our 40-footers and they have a top speed of 46 knots, so you can cruise at 40 if you like. With twin D4/300 the top speed is 42 knots.

    When I was young, only real speedboats could reach 40 knots, so times have changed with these powerful diesels.

    We will soon se if there is a difference with the new D6/400:s, maybe a couple of knots?

    Lars,

    When Paul was buying his Windy, the salesman asked him if he wanted to be the first owner of a 400. He called me.

    I think you can still hear my laughter on i-tunes for 25cents an hour. :D

    On vessels in the 35' - 45' range, isn't a Zeus or IPS better and more reliable than an outdrive?

    Not really and they take up much more space inside.
