Has anyone been on the new viking 42 convertible with the pod drives, how does it handle. Also, I am in the pacific northwest and you almost never see vikings up here, I was wondering if they will troll at 2-3 knots, or is that too slow.
I was just on a Viking 42 with the Pod drives, and they are awesome. I actually used to test the pods for Cummins before they were released to the public, and they are pretty much indestructable. As far as trolling at 2-3 knots, it may be closer to 3-4 knots using 1 engine, but it could be done. PM me and I can fill you in more on the boat.
This one had the 480's in it, which is the exact same as the 440, just a wastegated turbo and different injectors and a computer program. Boat handled great and was pretty fast, of course I'm a little biased because I worked on the development of the drives for 3 years, but overall, it's a great boat and handles impeccably.
I know the Zues 40' Cabo will troll as slow as 1 knot if you want it to. I am not sure on the IPS trolling gears.
Will viking be incorporating the pod drives into more of their yachts in the future, or are they going to be limited to the smaller (42 maybe 45) yachts, and will you incur more wear and tear/stress with the 600 over the 440/480 drives. Thanks
I don't think so. IMO the viking is slower and underpowered for it's size. The 40' Cabo zues has 600hp diesels standard and cruises at 31 knots. 30 knots (or more) is pretty much the benchmark these days. I ran the Cabo with the Viking guy on the boat, he was very concerned with how the Cabo got on plane versus the viking from idle speed. I got the impression that people felt the viking took a little long to get on plane.....
