Left Vermont last Wednesday Sept 24th with our Azimut 46 on our way to Chesapeak Bay for a month and then Florida for the winter.

Here is the tracking and a couple pictures.

First day was spent going down the lake and past the first of 12 Locks to Albany NY on the Hudson River.

Going through one of the Locks on the Champlain Canal

Clearing the lowest Bridge on the way to like Champlain, Clearance was just above 17 feet from the waterline.

Saturday the 27th, was an interesting day.

Left Highlands NJ around 7 AM went back up around Sandy Hook and hit 8-10 footers, they were well spread apart so we put it in hullspeed mode... 1400 rpm and 11 knots and rocked and rolled.

GPS said we would make AC in about 6 1/2 hours at 11 Knots and then when we passed Barnegat Light the heading went a little more toward the west so we had the seas to our back, we were able to get to our normal 21 knots cruising speed so we made AC around 1 PM. The last 5 miles were in freaking pea soup fog and we had to come in the inlet on idle on radar and GPS with all six eyes of the crew watching for anything!

    Fun ride but exhausting.

BTW that Bay is weird as hell to boat on rough... shallow and brown. I hope it's nicer on other days but I would not go out of my way to get on that thing again....

Well the rig will rest for a month in Chesapeak Bay.

Then we are heading to the Offshore World Championship in Key West the first week of November.

    Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

    Thank You,

    GLH,
As a videographer weeeel.:D Was cool to watch though. The pics were awesome. Thanks for sharing. Two questions: 1) what was that white thing hanging from your bimini with clothespins?:) 2) why didn't you wait a couple of weeks. You'd have caught the fall foiliage on the Hudson. Well worth it.
Surprised you didn't like the Delaware. Real easy run with the ranges although it can really kick up. How was the wood situation up near the C&D on the Delaware and Ches. sides? I've come through there more than once when you could walk for a few miles on either side just going log to log.
I'll be following you down in a few weeks (leaving NY about the 21st). If you'll be running down around that time PM me the name of your boat & I'll look out for you.

The white thing was my towel from the pre-dawn shower drying!

Waiting? I was weary about the conditions in the Atlantic the later I waited.

I am leaving Northern Chesapeak Bay around the 31st of Oct or the 1st of November heading to Key West if we can hook up great!

"The white thing was my towel from the pre-dawn shower drying." Thought it looked familiar.:) Guess we won't hook up as I should be in Lauderdale before you head out. Safe cruising to you skip.

nice pics... The delaware river is boring, there isn't much to see really. The Ches is nice, many nice spots. I love Annapolis (who wouldn't?)

i flew to Nantucket today to prepare the Johnson 70 that i run. I'm going to fly back down for Columbus Day week end while the boat is on the hard for a week and then head south... i'll probably won't be far behind you if you hang around in the Ches for a month altough i'm doing the run slow and easy at hull speed.

I love Nantucket... such a beatiful place... too bad it's only warm for 4 months a year!

Great pictures GLH! I really like the shot of the Statue of Liberty. We are on the Chesapeake and have been thinking of heading north to hang in the NY area.

How did your Azimut do in the 15 footers? Also, what kind of mileage are you seeing on longer runs?

Hopefully you will enjoy the Chesapeake, it is also kind of shallow and brown. There are lots of places to go, my favoites are Baltimore Inner harbor, Annapolis, Solomons and Saint Michaels. Where are you staying on the Chesapeake?

Thanks for sharing your vids & pics of the trip South.
That was vicarious yachting at it's finest!
It may be a trick of the lens, but your AZ appears to go like h-ll.

When we run at speed we are around 21 knots/25 mph

When we ran in the bigger stuff from NY to Atlantic City we ran hull speed around 10-11 knots.

I am not in Maryland for a month I left the boat there with a friend and will do the last leg to Key West at the beginning of November.

Thanks for the posts and hope to see you out there.
