Greetings; I am looking to charter in Majorca Spain, and would like to know if there is a way to verify that the broker I am working with capable of delivering on the Charter agreement. I can not find reviews for Chartering brokers. Any ideas other than asking the broker for references? Thanks in advance
Don't ask the broker for references. Instead, ask the broker for the email address of his last 5 charterers. You can tell from the dates on the list how active the broker is and additionally he/she will not be handpicking favorite clients. If the last 5 charterers are satisfied, you should be good to go. If the broker is unable to get permission from the 5 clients, then draft a short questionaire and ask the broker to forward it to the last 5 clients with your email address for response and note that it will not be cc'd to broker. If no one answers, that could be a red flag. Most of the time, clients are happy to brag about their good times and their great broker. Judy
We chartered a lot in South Florida in 2012-2013 and built a relationship with a charter provider there. When we needed to charter in Spain a couple of years ago, we got their advice and used them to coordinate with the charterer of the boat that interested us. They had a relationship and a lot of past and future business to protect, unlike the charterer of the boat for whom this was a one time deal. For instance, we won't sign the standard contract as it's written, but our Florida broker forwarded the contract we use, the changes we make, and working broker to broker we had no problem getting them agreed upon.
Many Charter Brokers are in Barcelona right now for their yearly show https://mybashow.com/ If your broker is attending it is at least a sign... Check here; https://mybashow.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/MYBACS_2019_Catalog1.pdf
