Now I know this isn't a big yacht or a diesel engine but this forum has an amazing amount of knowledge from its members so I thought I'd give it a shot...Basically I recently bought a classic runabout/tender and have restored it fully except for the powerplant. Problem is this boat is a custom built back in the 1959 with a 1960's dearborn eaton marine in-line 6 engine which ran until recently (similar as in the ford falcon car). The outdrive is a eaton model B outdrive. I would like to repower with a more modern engine and drive except I've been told that because the transom is flat an not angled outward of the hull like modern inboard/outboard hulls, this greatly limits the drive and engine I can use. So far the only option is an OMC stringer drive and engine up to a 1985 that I've been told, I would like a more modern engine and drive though...does anyone know of anything compatible? I want it to be reliable so that's why I'm aiming at replacing the entire setup, especially since the hull which is in such great condition an such nice lines to her!
Hi, It shouldn't matter if your transom is straight and you want to re power with a unit that requires an angled transom, re powering is such a big job that to have a wedge made to simulate an angled transom would add very little to your costs and or time. What you will have to be wary of is the weight difference between what upu have and what you want to use. Please post back and let the forum know how you get on, there are a lot of people who are interested in this type of thing and it may take a post or two to get their juices flowing enough to tap away at the keyboard to add something.
Thanks K1W1 for the suggestion, I thought about reshaping the transom around where the outdrive mounts. A wedge might help keep from making an eyesore of transom, and probably is a very good option or possible the only option.
Hi, Not having a clue what your boat looks like except to guess from what it was owered by before it will be less than 25'. If you have any sort of platform this will hide the wedge, if it is made the same outline and size as the outdrive no one will really notice it at all. What is this boat made of? Can you post any pics of it?
I added some pictures here...hopefully it works, I'll try and get a closeup photo of the transom. As for the hull material, its fiberglass and the length is 21FT.
Why not put a single arneson drive on it. Might be a bit of a bear to maneuver, but it would be, as the french say, "tres cool" !!
Nice looking little boat you got there. I am thinking if it was my boat I would be looking into turning in into an inboard possiblely utilising a v-drive. And puting a nice swim platform on the transom. Just a thought anyway.
ERTW, that's a great-looking boat. The break in the sheer and the barrel-back transom are retro-cool, IMO. Makes one wonder why Lars doesn't do a modern variation on that theme.
Thanks Loren, I may do but I have a friend who is doing it much better than me, Bo Zolland. http://www.viztech.se/portfolio4/index.php When I talked to him yesterday, he gave a hint that a big producer is interested to go ahead on a design from him right now!
Thanks Loren, that was exactly what I first thought when I saw her hull lines! When I'm down at the marina docked, alot of people walk up thinking its new meant to look retro, because unless you take a close look at the hull or the outdrive, everything else is new from the deck up! CaptPKilbride its funny you mentioned the surface drives, because my brother and I were talking about it earlier today! The boat is on a trailer at the back of my plant so it makes it easy to day dream about! he sent me a link to q-sped drives but I really like the simplicity of arneson. I'd like to just make a smaller version of an arneson or q-sped, I've got alot of CNC equipment at my disposal, might make for a good winter project!
Verrry nice boat ERTW!!!! I'm not an expert on Arneson's, but a single Arneson sounds like a bad idea to me. As the propeller is only half in the water when at speed, it'll give your stern a push sideways. Even a submerged single prop does this a little, but with an Arneson it would be quite extreme. I'd go for the wedge (if needed) and just a new sterndrive (Mercruiser etc.). You don't want to mess up the original weight distribution too much either. Bruno
