I have a 1998 Viking 50' SF with 820 Manns and am looking for any opinions or experiences of trolling valves on the ZF transmissions. Would like to be able to troll with both motors at 2-2.5 mph here in the Great Lakes. ZF says they can install them but cannot gurarantee to obtain that speed. I've used trolling bags but they are a not fun to use and am not sure what kind of stress goes on the cleats. Thanks ahead
I have trolling valves on my 43 Cabo with 900 Mans and its no problem adjusting the speed down to where you are barely moving. My max speed using the trolling valves is 5.4 knts. My trans are ZF350a.
CSkipR Here is the comment from ZF, I will be calling them to find out what they really mean, make sense to you? I can only imagine that there are other boats outfitted with the transmission on boats of similar size out there. Just want to really know. The earlier model IRM 350PL transmission will not produce the level of trolling performance that the later model with the MB30 control valve can achieve with its more efficient design and greater range of adjustment from its trolling valve. Ideally, a fully electronic system using the EB31 electronic control block and trolling valve combined with electronic controls using closed-loop speed control such as SmartCommand would produce the best results; however this is not adaptable to the earlier IRM 350PL. Also, actual trolling speed of the vessel will be affected by the particulars of the vessel and the application itself (hull design, propeller size, operating temperatures, etc.). Unfortunately we cannot guarantee how much speed reduction you will be able to achieve with these valves, or estimate the range of trolling speeds that you will be able to obtain from the vessel.
