The CAT C-18's are a good engine, but not sure if they are best suited to a Trawler application. What engine does CAT recommend? I know that the Cummins KTA19-M3's are great engines for a trawler situation and have run one in a Northern Marine

this is what cat recomends it seames to have replaced the 3408 , in most off road equipment and from our experiance it is more fuel efficent than the V8 , i am still in the think process

Well I can say that the C18 is a great durable engine. There is another thread on engine questions and several people have 5,000-10,000 hours on gen sets with c18's. Parts are very reasonable, they run very clean, are very torque and you have worldwide coverage. The Cummins in this Northern Marine has been from Vancouver to Ft. Laud, to Ny, back to Vancouver, Back through the Panama Canal, and South America, then up to Ft. Laud with no issues.

    Hi,

The C 18's I wrote about earlier on another thread were actually originally specified as 3408's.

It was a departure from the norm for the yard that used them and they continue to use them as their Genset Engines- 19 sets since they changed

Is the vessel a trawler or a "fast trawler?"

I recently had a client replace twin Cat 3126s on a GB 46 with new, similar model. Although he allowed for the "x" factor, the costs were exorbitantly more than estimated and the time estimate was off by 4 months. Yard and Cat supplier coordination on responsibilities and timing were factors in both.

    Be prepared.

You'd think a 3408 rated continuous would run for a jillion hours.
    Why the need to replace?

As Judy points out, replacing a motor that is different than it's predecessor always, always costs more than you think it will...the mounts/foundations/tranny dimensions differ slightly making shaft alignment a bear, not to mention repropping...a veritable Pandora's Box, if you will. And, then there are the Human Factors (screwups & miscommunications) that weigh in.

    Good luck, Bub!

    thank's

judy it's a deep draft slow boat we cruse at 8.5 knt's

the cat that is in the boat now is original we have been all over the world with it it now has a little over 10,000 hrs since it's last in frame , so the eng need's to come out to do a real overhaul , i am going to replace the gen set's also as they have over 40,000 hours on them , after consulting with cat they think the same gear box and prop combo will work just fine

I was doing some work on the boat today, it's a KT19-M3. Single turbo I think. I've run the boat before and honestly I can't quite remember, but it wasn't that much fuel. I'll try to remember and ask them. The engine has 2,000hrs so far and hasn't had an issue.

    yes i have ,
thanks for asking one of the questions that keeps popping in my minde is wiil all new machinery and any value to the boat when i go to sell /trade for some thing diffrent i accutaly have an electronic huei setting in our shop that
could be reconfigured to a marine application with out much work

i am also very fortunate to have a very good engineer that has been with me for many years , we did a repower on a previous boat we had and relising it is a lot of cost /hard work the end resault was very good

    thanks travler
