Been thining about retiring and living onboard. 1/2 of my friends suggested pre-owned trawler say a 49' DeFever pilothouse of the 80s vintage with a going price between $250 - 300K. Or 42' Grand Banks for about $200K. The other 1/2 recomended Carver Mariner 36' of mid 80 vintage, going price - $50K - 70K. Can't beat that. Since we are talking about a couple living onboard, with very occasional 2 family members taggig along, mostly doing coastal cruises fom Maine to the carribean, but definitely one round on the great loupe and one down east loupe. Will a Carver yacht do the trick? Pls advice on the pros and cons of trawler and yacht.
In this case it seems to me that 36' vs 42'+ is the bigger question. Which size more than type. Kelly Cook
This is going to be your home afloat, get a full survey of any vessel that you are interested in buying. There is a reason the Carver is so much less than the Defever. The last thing you want is to be stuck in foul weather some where hoping the boat will hold together. The old saying "You get what you pay for" applies to a certain extent here.
Those are some fairly long runs. The diesel-powered DeFever and the GB you mention will have roughly three times the range as the V8 gas-powered Carver.
hope this helps If you are going to be living aboard I would only consider a trawler. The livability and performance of a trawler far exceeds that of a motor cruiser. The cost of maintenance is less and you will feel safer and more comfortable. Furthermore your maintenance and running costs will be much less.
