I was watching the F1 time trials and just as I turned on the TV the announcer was talking about a tragic accident at sea for the head of Michelin Tires.

I am a bit sketchy on what the what/where/how it all happened, other then someone died and I think it was the CEO/President of Michelin tires and who was also part of the Michelin family. Perhaps a grandson or great grandson of the founder?

Anyone here more about this and what happend?

Seems like there are a fair amount of sinkings/groundings lately in yachting, maybe it has always been this way and I am just more aware now with having a interest in yachting myself.

I am sure that put the racers and teams in a somber mood for the Monaco race this weekend...

I'd guess that some of the Michelin people felt it but they are pros and just got their heads down and concentrated on the job at hand.

Competition yachting like any other sport where the edge is being pushed will always have a risk factor. Unfortunate and sad when there are fatalities but it is the nature of the beast.

    Hi,

This guy was not in any competition, I read in a French paper yesterday that he was on a fishing trip with an old friend. The other chaps body was still not recovered at the time the article was written.

Any updates on Edouard Michelin's tragic accident?
So far all we know is that the charter fishing boat, "Le Liberte" that he was on (operated by Mr Normant, a bass fisherman and head of his local fishing association) was thought to have sunk."Nobody saw anything, nobody heard anything. The sea was calm, but there was a thick fog that didn't lift until the middle of the day," said the spokesman for the Atlantic maritime prefecture. The maritime prefecture said the area was one of the riskiest on the Brittany coast. "It is a high-risk zone, where only professionals can fish. There are rocks and currents - it's a real boiling pot," said an official.

Apparently he drowned, but unlike Normant (sic Normand) his body was recovered.:(
